The International Festival of Cinema and Technology announces its animation award winners from its IFCT 2002-2003 World Tour. Tim Finns LIMBOSCAPE took the best animation prize with AN APPLE A DAY, directed by Juan Duque, took the best computer animation award. The tour began December 2002 in Paris, France and concluded August 24 in New York City.
Acme Filmworks recently wrapped production on a new 2D Flash-animated Vegas-themed ad for the Wisconsin Lottery. Designed by Emmy Award-winning animator Dave Wasson, the spot features retro graphics and a jazzy score recalling the 1950s Vegas style. Beginning with a quick impression of the Strip, the ad moves through roulette, 7-11, blackjack and slots, positioning Wisconsin's new "scratcher" card in the middle of the screen.

Silver Lining Prods. and Mainframe Entertainment are co-producing a new animated adventure series (26x22) for preschoolers, SMALL AND FRIENDS, based on the best-selling childrens book series featuring MR. BEAR by Scottish author/illustrator Debi Gliori.
Commercial film and design company Hornet Inc. recently completed INSTRUCTOART for MTV, a series of eight promos that will premier during the MTV Video Music Awards on August 28, 2003.
To create the spots, Hornet creative director Eng San Kho worked in close collaboration with the INSTRUCTOART creator Matt Vescovo. "The biggest challenge was figuring out how to best animate the spots and still stay true to its humor," said Kho.

A new production company based in South Beach, Florida is launching three new animation series on the Internet, in hopes of catching a wave of interest to develop them into long-form programming for pick-up by cable companies. Shallow Beach Entertainment has worked for 18 months to assemble the creative and technical team to develop three very distinct animated series appealing to vastly different target audiences.
Warner Independent Pictures, the recently formed specialty film division of Warner Bros. Entertainment Group, has hired Michael Andreen as exec vp production and Laura Kim as exec vp marketing and publicity, the studio announced. They join Paul Federbush and Tracey Bing, who joined WIP last week as svp production and acquisitions and vp production and acquisitions, respectively.

ABC Television recently turned to emerging media and post studio Digital Bucket to create an innovative DVD promoting the network's new fall season. An entertaining and effective promo give-away, the DVD will inform viewers about the new programs, movies, returning ABC favorites and the TGIF franchise.
Adam Taylor, partner and creative director for Topanga, California-based Taylor Entertainment Group LLC recently completed three new PINK PANTHER animated promotional shorts for MGM Studios. Animated in Flash, these 90-second shorts promote PINK PANTHERs worldwide consumer products and licensing business. Adam animated, storyboarded and directed these special edition promos.
Paradise Financial Group has launched a new animated production firm called Paradise Family Pictures LLC. The El Segundo, California-based company will produce animated 3D TV and feature film projects for the worldwide market. The new company will have three divisions: development, production and marketing. An international sales division will launch in May 2004. The toon house is in production on two 22-minute shows, COOL CAT ROCKY and IT'S A VERY MERRY JOLLY CHRISTMAS. Both projects will be completed early 2004.

Innoventive Software, LLC has released FrameForge 3D, the first 3D storyboarding software. The program gives users an easy-to-manipulate 3D virtual film set with fully posable actors, hills, trees, snap-together walls, furniture and other elements. FrameForge 3D allows users to print the boards, including technical information required to create that shot on location. Storyboard shots can be associated with parts of an imported script, played as a slideshow, exported to standard graphics files, HTML pages or turned into a Macromedia Flash animation. Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts-based Pileated Pictures announced the release of GUS AND INKYS UNDERWATER ADVENTURES, a set of Flash games based on a character in PBS hit show, BETWEEN THE LIONS. The series of online educational tools was developed for the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) Get Ready to Read! program, promoting literacy and assessing skills among preschool children.
Sydney, Australia-based animation studio Mad Cow Pictures announced it is providing pre-production and production design, effects and support for the upcoming feature version of CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG. The film is being produced by Scholastic Entertainment, Big Red Dog Productions and Starburst Studios. Mad Cows co-owner Steve Trenbirth will serve as the unit director.
Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation have bought the rights to the series pilot of SICKCOM from comic book artist Robert Steven Rhine (MY BRAIN ESCAPES ME, CHICKEN SOUP FOR SATAN) and his partner, animator Frank Forte (LI'L PIMP movie, THE VAMPIRE VERSES, THE CLETUS AND FLOYD SHOW).
ZODIAC MEDIA founder/president H. Paul Gill died suddenly of heart failure while playig basketball on June 25, 2003 at the age of 28 in Toronto, Canada.
Matt Jones, in-house director for Uli Meyer Animation in London, recently completed a new promo, CLAPPING SONG, for Nickelodeon UK. Animated in Flash, it promotes the Nick Junior shows DORA THE EXPLORER, THE HOOBS, LITTLE BILL, BLUE'S CLUES and YOU DO TOO.
Jones designed all the new characters and storyboarded the promo, working with Nick Jr. producer Maria Timotheou, in just under six weeks. The colorful & simple style is intended to appeal to kids under five years old. Flash animation was produced by Jon Jones and Jason Kotey.
Flash specialty studio ANIMAX is producing a 35mm-animated short film for Jellyman Prods., CATCHING KRINGLE, in a mix of 2D techniques. ANIMAX is using Flash, USAnimation and traditional hand animation for the holiday themed short, featuring the voices of Danny De Vito and John Rhy-Davies, with a cameo by Larry King. The film will be ready to exhibit at film and animation festivals in time for the holiday season.
