Filming Begins on Inception in Japan

Christopher Nolan's INCEPTION has started filming in Tokyo, according to COMINGSOON.net.

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy and Michael Caine and is set to open July 16, 2010.

The film is a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.

Sigourney Weaver, Blythe Danner Added to Paul Cast

Sci-fi comedy PAUL has added Sigourney Weaver, Blythe Danner and RENO 911 star Joe Lo Truglio to its ranks, per VARIETY.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost wrote the film, which already has Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman and Bill Hader signed on with Greg Mottola to direct.

In the film, two sci-fi geeks make a pilgrimage to Area 51 in Nevada and run into an alien called Paul along the way.

Athletes, Artists Join Voices in Animated Story Of Nostalgia And Hope

New York, June 17, 2009 -- An All-Star cast of entertainers and Baseball Hall of Famers are providing the voices of characters for a long-awaited animated film based on a best-selling children's book, "One Last Time: Good-Bye to Yankee Stadium."

The animated film, called "Henry And Me," features Richard Gere and Reggie Jackson. It is in production with a screenplay by David Stern and scheduled for release next Spring.

Universal Working to Bring Bride of Frankenstein to Life

Universal and Imagine are in talks with Neil Burger to write and direct a remake of BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER's Risky Business Blog.

Burger wrote and directed THE ILLUSIONIST for Yari Film Group.

The original BRIDE was released in 1935, starring Boris Karloff as the monster and Elsa Lanchester as his bride, picking up where 1931's FRANKENSTEIN left off.

Brian Grazer and Sean Daniel will produce with Karen Kehela, David Bernardi and Chris Wade will oversee for Imagine.

Animated Feature in Pipeline at Unique Features

A year after forming Unique Features at Warner Bros., Bob Shaye and longtime partner Michael Lynne have announced a slate of 11 films, per VARIETY.

Those projects include their first animated film with an original score by Paul McCartney. Titled HIGH IN THE CLOUDS, the film is an adaptation of a children's book written by McCartney, Geoff Dunbar and Philip Ardagh. Rob Minkoff will direct and Caroline Thompson will adapt.

The story follows a squirrel's quest to find an animal sanctuary.

A wonderful surprise waited for me Saturday morning, when I went seeing the boys. Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman had been with me through my entire life. I listened to their songs, from Winnie the Pooh and Jungle Book, from Mary Poppins through to Aristocats.

Sorry for writing so late. But yesterday evening I suffered from severe animation illness, information overload and heavy small talk. After seeing the commissioned film program filled with commercials and music videos up to the brink – sitting next to an equally tired Ron Diamond – I hardly reached my apartment and went into dreamland seconds later.

Indy 5 Moving Forward

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL star Shia LaBeouf told BBC News that a sequel to the 2008 summer hit is a go (via ComingSoon.net).

"Steven [Spielberg] just said that he cracked the story on it before I left and I think they're gearing that up," LaBeouf said. CRYSTAL SKULL, despite middling reviews, banked a worldwide gross of $786.6 million at the box office, the second place earner behind THE DARK KNIGHT.

Natalie Portman Added to Black Swan Cast

Natalie Portman has been signed on to play the lead in Darren Aronofsky's BLACK SWAN supernatural thriller, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

The film, set up at Universal since 2007, and based in the world of New York City ballet, has been changed a bit in the last two years. Universal put the film in turnaround and has been making the rounds at the studios and specialty divisions. Development exec at Aronofsky's Protozoa Pictures, Mark Heyman, has done a re-write of John McLaughlin's original script. Mike Medavoy's Phoenix Pictures and Protozoa are producing.

Screenwriter Marc Haimes has been hired by Fox to pen adventure script FAMILY HISTORY, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Described as NATIONAL TREASURE meets BACK TO THE FUTURE, the film has been shepherded by producers Cormac & Marianne Wibberley, who co-wrote the two NATIONAL TREASURE films for Disney. Michael Punke originally wrote the script.

Hangover & Up Continue Box Office Dominance

Staying in the number one spot at the box office this week was THE HANGOVER, bringing in another $32.8M and only dropping about 27 percent. The Warner Bros. film now has a two-week cume of $105.8M.

Also not moving was Disney-Pixar's UP, which stayed a close #2 with $30.7M and a three-week take of $187.4M.

Coming in third was action opener THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3 (Sony) with $23.4M. The Denzel Washington-John Travolta starring film has vfx from Asylum VFX and Eye-Spy Productions.

Bekmambetov Talks Wanted 2, Jolie's Character to Come Back

WANTED director Timur Bekmabetov talked to Russian news website RIA NOVOSTI recently, and the helmer said they are making preparations for a sequel, and that they've found a way to bring back Angelina Jolie's character back to life (via ComingSoon.net).

"In July we will start preparation for the film. I think in the late autumn or winter shooting will be performed. The shooting will take place in America, India and Russia," Bekmabetov said.

Moon Features VFX From Cinesite

Cinesite created all of the visual effects, and oversaw the Visual Effects Supervision for Liberty Films' sci-fi thriller MOON. Their work involved the creation of over 270 visual effects shots, including the photorealistic CG Gerty robot (one of the film's principal characters), stunning panoramic digital lunarscape matte paintings showing the space environment, and extensive multi-element compositing.

Del Toro Announces Hobbit Casting

On BBC Radio 5, Guillermo del Toro announced that Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen will all reprise their roles from THE LORD OF THE RINGS in his two-part HOBBIT screen adaptation. Weaving played Elrond the elf leader, Serkis played Gollum and McKellen received an Oscar nomination for his performance as wizard Gandalf. The two films are set to be released December 2011 and December 2012.

Stanton's John Carter of Mars Starts Filming in November

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE is reporting that Disney/Pixar's first live-action feature will begin filming in Utah in November. Andrew Stanton's adaptation of JOHN CARTER OF MARS is a project that has been developed and shelved in Hollywood for decades. Previous filmmakers who have tried to bring the story to the screen include Bob Clampett, Ray Harryhausen, John McTiernan, Jon Favreau, Robert Rodriguez and SKY CAPTAIN helmer Kerry Conran.
