Robotech Gets New Writer

Mania.com reports that Tom Rob Smith has been hired to take another stab the live-action ROBOTECH feature. The film has been in development since 2007 with previous writers including Lawrence Kasdan and Alfred Gough & Miles Millar. Tobey Maguire, Akiva Goldsman (JONAH HEX), Charles Roven (THE DARK KNIGHT) and Jason Netter (WANTED) are the producers.

Transformers 2 Has Biggest Wednesday Opening Ever

Despite savage reviews, TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN seems bullet proof at the box office. Michael Bay's actioner had the biggest Wednesday opening ever in U.S. history, earning $60.6 million in 24 hours. HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX held the previous record of $44.2 million. On the all-time opening day list it only trails THE DARK KNIGHT ($67.2 million). The film is on pace to beat SPIDER-MAN 2's five-day total of $152.4 million, but it will have to pick up some ground over the weekend if it wants to surpass THE DARK KNIGHT's 5-day record of $203.8 million.

Miller Writing 300 Sequel

ComingSoon.net reports that Frank Miller is writing a sequel to Zack Snyder's hit 300. Snyder told the site that Miller will create a comic first set in ancient Greece. As for the scale of the new story, Snyder said that Miller's plans are grander, bringing viewers to Athens and the Aegean. For the film, Snyder plans to keep the look the same.

Watchmen Director's Cut Coming to Four Theaters

Dallas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and New York will get the director's cut of Zack Snyder's WATCHMEN, reports VARIETY. Fans will get a chance to see 25 more minutes for one week in theaters on July 17th, followed by its release on DVD on July 21st.

The film hits theaters a week before Comic-Con. At the convention, Snyder plans to host a BD-Live screening of the film, where WATCHMEN Blu-ray owners can view the film and convention discussion together.

Fox Hires Hitman 2 Writer

IESB reports that 20th Century Fox has tapped Kyle Ward (KANE AND LYNCH) to pen a follow-up to HITMAN, which was based on the popular videogame. The original starred Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47, the hitman with the barcode tattooed on the back of his bald head. No firm word has been announced whether he will be returning. However, producers Adrian Askarieh, Daniel Alter, and Chuck Gordon will all return.

Transformers 2 Marks 2nd Best Midnight Run

Paramount can feel confident that they have a big hit on their hands with TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. The sequel posted the second best midnight box office with $16 million. Only THE DARK KNIGHT made more cash in its opening day midnight screenings, earning $18.5 million. TRANSFORMERS 2 midnight opening is still the best ever for a Wednesday open, which was previously held by HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX.

Sandler, Stallone & Favreau to Voice Zookeeper's Animals

Adam Sandler, Cher, Jon Favreau, Sylvester Stallone and Judd Apatow are among those who will provide voices for zoo animals in MGM's THE ZOOKEEPER, per VARIETY.

The live-action comedy stars Kevin James and Rosario Dawson. Sandler's Happy Madison is a producer on the film, which is set to start shooting this summer for an October 8, 2010 release.

Sandler will voice a capuchin monkey, Cher a giraffe, Favreau a bear, Stallone a lion and Apatow an elephant. Jim Breuer, Faizon Love and Bas Rutten also are voicing animals.

Universal Pictures has purchased the film rights to Larry Doyle's novel GO MUTANTS!, per VARIETY. Doyle is set to write the script and Imagine Ent.'s Brian Grazer will produce.

A teen comedy set in a high school, GO MUTANTS! imagines if all the classic 1950s alien invasion movies came true, and years later, the children of the mutant creatures have assimilated into the school's population.

Producers Narrow Predator Director Search

LATINO REVIEW reports that director Nimrod Antal is one of seven contenders to direct the Alex Litvak-penned reboot PREDATORS, based on Robert Rodriguez's treatment. Antal is the top candidate and the director most likely to get the job.

Antal directed ARMORED and VACANCY for Sony. Rodriguez is producing the PREDATORS update.

Audiences Say Yes to The Proposal

Romantic comedy THE PROPOSAL (Disney, vfx by Brickyard VFX) beat out all other competition for the heart of the U.S. audience, winning the Father's Day weekend box office (ending June 21) with $33.6M.

Last week's two-time winner, THE HANGOVER, dropped just 18 percent for the number two slot with $26.8M. In three weeks the Vegas comedy has earned $152.8M for Warner Bros.

Coming in third was Disney-Pixar's animated hit UP as it grossed another $23.5M for a four-week total of $226.3M.

Oscar winner Charles Gibson (BABE, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST) is set to make his directorial debut with family comedy THE GOBLIN, per VARIETY.

Wind Dancer Film head Matt Williams will produce with production head Judd Payne and Matt Berenson. David McFadzean and Dete Meserve of Wind Dancer will exec produce.

Gibson worked as a second unit director on the PIRATES franchise and TERMINATOR SALVATION in addition to working with the visual effects.

DreamWorks Adds Ghostly Project to Schedule

DreamWorks Animation is moving forward with an untitled ghost movie that will compete with two others for a fourth quarter 2012 release, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Referred to internally as BOO U., the feature has Jon Vitti (THE SIMPSONS MOVIE) on board to write the screenplay and will be about a ghost who is bad at his job and has to return to school.

Athletes, Artists Join Voices in Animated Story Of Nostalgia And Hope

New York, June 17, 2009 -- An All-Star cast of entertainers and Baseball Hall of Famers are providing the voices of characters for a long-awaited animated film based on a best-selling children's book, "One Last Time: Good-Bye to Yankee Stadium."

The animated film, called "Henry And Me," features Richard Gere and Reggie Jackson. It is in production with a screenplay by David Stern and scheduled for release next Spring.

Universal Working to Bring Bride of Frankenstein to Life

Universal and Imagine are in talks with Neil Burger to write and direct a remake of BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER's Risky Business Blog.

Burger wrote and directed THE ILLUSIONIST for Yari Film Group.

The original BRIDE was released in 1935, starring Boris Karloff as the monster and Elsa Lanchester as his bride, picking up where 1931's FRANKENSTEIN left off.

Brian Grazer and Sean Daniel will produce with Karen Kehela, David Bernardi and Chris Wade will oversee for Imagine.
