The 8th World Animation Celebration (WAC) will present awards to the best new animated works from around the world. Events include; The World Animation screenings; The World Animation competition; The Animation Hall of Fame ceremony; six one-day animation business conferences; four days of animation seminars and classes; two days of animation career planning sessions; The World Animation Marketplace and Recruitment Expo; The Battle of the Animation Studios Synchronized Swimming Teams; networking parties and receptions; and a one-day animation educators conference. Categories for the competition include feature and short films, television series, television specials, commercials, music videos, public service announcements, educational films, experimental animation, computer animation, Web animation, title sequences and direct-to-video productions. Registration fees range from $25 to $100.

L!CENSING 2001 is the 21st annual trade show for the multi-billion dollar worldwide business of licensing, marketing and merchandising. The show is expected to showcase over 4,000 properties during the three-day event from some of the globe's leading companies. Moderators of the various panels will be: Nell Roney, VP of Nancy Bailey & Associates; Greg Battersby, partner at Grimes & Battersby, LLP; and Russ Brown, senior VP, consumer products for Marvel Entertainment. The event is sponsored by LIMA, the licensing industry's worldwide trade association.

Invoking the universes of Edgar Alan Poe, Lewis Carroll and the claustrophobia of Kafka, the work of Czech filmmaker Jan Svankmajer is bizarrely beautiful: a witty blend of the macabre, the grotesque and gothic horror! The series opens with the LA premiere of his newest film GREEDY GUTS (OSTESANEK, 2001). Svankmajer's features ALICE and PLEASURE CONSPIRATORS will screen along with several programs of his short films, plus the Brothers Quay's THE CABINET OF JAN SVANKMAJER (14 min.). All programs will be held at the American Cinematheque's Egyptian Theater at 6712 Hollywood Boulevard (between McCadden Place & Las Palmas Avenue).

The Consumer Electronics Association (C.E.A.) and JEDEC issued a call for speakers for their new conference, EdgeTech: Emerging Technologies Showcase, featuring the latest semiconductor and consumer technology. EdgeTech will consist of three tracks, the first educating attendees on how to build the technology, the second explaining how to produce and sell the technology, and the final track showcasing technology in the marketplace. Companies can also display new technologies recently available on the market in five-minute demonstrations. The tracks will feature experts and leaders from all aspects of the consumer and semiconductor technology industry. Companies interested in speaking at EdgeTech should contact Lisa McKellar at C.E.A. by June 15, 2001.

DISCOP is a television market covering over 30 emerging television markets in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Central Asia and Caucasus. In conjunction with the market, DISCOP 2001 will present two new features: The WebTV East Exhibition, an exhibition of technological Web-based solutions that promote television brands and video content on-line; and the DISCOP Campus Sessions, a program of thematic sessions covering the production, marketing and promotion of television content in Central and Eastern Europe. Sessions include television format production in Central and Eastern Europe; historical documentary co-production; sports programming; the Internet as a marketing tool for TV stations; European union funding and training sources available to central and eastern European audiovisual professionals; and key audience data.

The six-day conference will debut the results of the GSTA recently released Economic Impact Study, a comprehensive examination of the quantitative and qualitative factors that affect how large format films are produced, distributed and exhibited. The conference will also feature up to 12 new giant screen films and 4 short films and will introduce a nightly "wrap party" for attendees to network and expound on the events of the day. Other conference favorites will include Films-In-Development and Films-In-Progress, Technical Sessions, Roundtables, Developing Members Workshop, and the GSTA Achievement Awards.
The Giant Screen Theater Association is a nonprofit association dedicated to the worldwide growth of the large format film industry by supporting the developers and presenters of giant screen film experiences. Its goal is to be the global forum for producers, operators and suppliers of the large format film industry and to foster its growth and development in both the educational and commercial sectors.

Chrysalis TV London presents: They Shoot Animators, Don't They? a marathon animation game where a group of six animators compete against each other to create a 1-3 minute animated film in a sleepless 72 hours. All the animations will be featured on the Channel 4 TV Website where viewers will be able to vote for their favorite. The winning animator will be awarded a top holiday and cash prize.
