"Comic Book Idol 2" Art Contest

Submission Deadline: May 27, 2004
Location: World Wide Web

"Comic Book Idol" is an amateur art competition hosted by CBR. The second edition will be hosted by J. Torres, author of the "Open Your Mouth" column at CBR (www.comicbookresources.com). It's a five-week, five-round contest in which contestants will be asked to complete an art assignment each week by a deadline. Their art will be posted in a CBR forum designed especially for judges to post comments on and critique said art, as well as for CBR readers to view and vote on their favorites. CBR fans select which contestants move on in subsequent rounds, and two artists will be eliminated from the competition in each round until we have the one and only "Comic Book Idol." The regular panel of judges for our second competition consists of Mike Carlin (senior group editor, DC Comics), Jeff Mariotte (editor-in-chief, IDW Publishing) and Eric Stephenson (managing editor, Image Comics). There will also be "surprise" comic creator guest judges to be announced, one per round, as the competition progresses. This year, all 10 of the contestants invited into the competition will receive a CBR T-Shirt, comic boards courtesy of BCEMylar.com and free passes to Comic-Con International San Diego 2004. The winner of Comic Book Idol will be given a pin-up assignment for an IDW publication to be selected by Jeff Mariotte based on the artist's interests and abilities, a short story assignment written by Eric Stephenson to be published in the forthcoming FOUR LETTER WORLDS anthology from Image Comics, Mike Carlin personally handing your art samples to editors at DC Comics for their review and consideration and airfare, accommodation and passes for Comic-Con International San Diego 2004. To enter, potential contestants must have samples of their work on a Website or online portfolio. Contestants must have the ability to scan in their artwork and post it online to participate, and should be prepared to draw everything from covers to actual comic pages. Contestants will be given approximately five days to complete each art assignment. The contest begins with an open call for submissions kicking off May 27, 2004. Those wishing to be considered for the five-round competition must post links to their work in the designated CBR "Comic Book Idol" forum. A selection committee consisting of five of last year's CBI contestants, including winner Patrick Scherberger, will visit all the links posted and choose 10 artists to face the judges and CBR readers. The first official round of competition starts June 3 and the event continues through till July 8 when the winner is officially announced. Visit CBR at http://www.comicbookresources for more information.
