After 6 years, the organizers of the Oslo Animation Festival have moved operations to Fredrikstad. Even with a new name, the Festival invites both animators and spectators to take part in five days of animated fun to promote the screening and better understanding of animation. The festival presents: Nordic and Baltic films in competition, Nordic and Baltic Panorama, International highlights, a Focus on Canadian animation, Paul Driessan as Guest of Honor, Animated Special Effects, a Celebration of Oskar Fischinger, Jury Progams, Exhibitions and even more. You can enter your films to this international festival on VHS tape.

Eugenio Zanetti: Film Dreams and Haunting Visions

The Academy Foundation Galleries is presenting an exhibition of production designer Eugenio Zanetti's work. The exhibit will highlight Zanetti's Hollywood film designs that combine Gothic and Romanesque styles. Recently Zantetti helped bring to life the evil house in THE HAUNTING. The Argentine-born designer has created amazing visuals for such movies as WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, FLATLINERS and WARRIORS OF VIRTUE. Zanetti took home an Oscar for art direction for his work on RESTORATION. Many of the masters' oil paintings, watercolors, architectural plans, set pieces, props, photographs and video clips will be on display at the gallery. The Academy Gallery is open to the public. Admission is free. The Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 am to 5 pm and weekends from noon to 6 pm.

VES 2000: A Festival of Visual Effects

The Visual Effects Society (VES), in conjunction with CreativePlanet's VFX.Pro, will present VES 2000: A Festival of Visual Effects. This year's event will feature presentations and discussions by the award-winning VFX teams from some of the current outstanding visual effects film and television productions, including GLADIATOR, DINOSAUR and the TV mini-series ALICE IN WONDERLAND. Speakers will include visual effects professionals from ILM, Sony Pictures Imageworks, The Secret Lab and Mill Film. Friday evening's discussion of THE PERFECT STORM will be followed by a screening of the film. On Saturday evening, CHICKEN RUN will be screened after a "making of" presentation.

Star Wars: The Magic of Myth

The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum's exhibit "Star Wars: The Magic of Myth" has come to the Field Museum. One of the most popular Smithsonian exhibits of all-time, "Magic of Myth" features costumes, characters like Chewbacca and Jabba the Hut, as well as production props and models. The exhibit opens with the actual 8-foot model of the Imperial Star Destroyer used in the film. Tickets are US$5 on top of the basic Field Museum admission for adults; $2.50 extra for children aged 3-11 and $4 extra for seniors and students. Museum admission for adults is $8 and for children, seniors and students it's $4. Wednesdays are free.

ASIFA-Hollywood is presenting Puppet Mania 2000, a gathering of Puppeteers of America's Pacific Southwest Region. The celebration features an international list of puppeteers including Sid Krofft, Velma Dawson of Howdy Doody fame, Ray Harryhausen and the puppeteers behind the scenes of such films and shows as MUPPETS TONIGHT, BEAKMAN'S WORLD, BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, MEN IN BLACK and more. Running until August 19, 2000, the exhibition will showcase puppets from the outstanding collection of Alan Cook as well as many famous TV and film puppets. Events scheduled are: Sid and Marty Krofft and Stars; Tony Urbano and His Marionettes; Puppets, Puppets, Puppets: Tom Jensen The Wizard of Oz - Storybook Puppet Theater; Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale by Lewis Mahlmann & Company plus Puppet Mania 2K Cabaret; Puppetoon Film Festival with Bob Baker and a Special Appearance by Ray Harryhausen; Kevin Menegus and his Marionettes plus Three Little Kittens: The Mewsical; A Night of Puppet Maniacs; and Eugene Seregin and His Marionettes from Russia Plus Fable of the Fox - Los Titiriteros de Binefar from Spain. VFX 2000 will highlight the growing industry of visual effects. The conference is a biennial event sponsored by BKSTS (Moving Image Society) and the Visual Effects Society. This year's event will showcase developments in the areas of digital cinema and large format films. Filmmaker seminars will include Aardman Animations' Dave Sproxton and Tom Barnes on CHICKEN RUN; The Mill's John Nelson on GLADITOR; and The Secret Labs' Neil Krepela, Neil Eskuri and Mike Belzer on DINOSAUR. Other seminars will deal with topics such as the history of matte painting, digital intermediate systems, puppeteers in the 21st century, desktop visual effects, models vs. 3D and much more.
