The Minnesota Fringe Theater & Performance Festival, now in its eighth year, announces the inclusion of a film and video festival. The tradition of the Fringe is a non-competitive, all-inclusive celebration. All work entered will be programmed on a first come, first served basis. The only requirement is that the short be no longer than 60 minutes in length. The festival is looking for shorts of all categories and production qualities: experimental, fake-docs, horror, music videos, documentaries, student work, recent releases, as well as old 16mm. Films and videos must be submitted on VHS. The festival will screen VHS, super 8, 16mm and 35mm.

The Valley Film Festival is the first and only San Fernando Valley film festival. It is launched to bring together established filmmakers, emerging talent and their audiences on the studio backlot - just North of Hollywood. The Valley Film Festival will showcase eight shorts and eight features. Each night of the festival will be devoted to one specific theme: San Fernando Valley Specific, Foreign/World Cinema, Women in Film and Documentaries. The 8th World Animation Celebration (WAC) will present awards to the best new animated works from around the world. SAFO is a student animation festival that not only provides a showcase for filmmakers and animation schools, but also provides emerging animators, through professional development workshops, with the creative and industrial tools needed to survive in the animation industry. Furthermore, through the Animarket Trade Fair, SAFO has created an intimate recruitment and promotional venue for schools, studios and software companies. In addition, like the Ottawa International Animation Festival, SAFO features workshops, retrospective screenings, a trade fair and an Animator's Cafe (or Chez-Ani). The international jury will be comprised of: Phil Mulloy, animator (U.K.), Koji Yamamura, animator (Japan), Richard Meltzer, writer and critic (U.S.A.), and Annick Teninge, Animation World Network, (U.S.A.). This year's special screenings include tributes to Phil Mulloy, Koji Yamamura, Bolex Brothers and Olive Jar Animation. Other programmes include: "Sailing to Sicily," a look at interpretations of hell; a gay and lesbian animation panorama; and a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Ottawa International Animation Festival. New to this year's festival is International Student Panoramas, highlighting the wide array of animation being produced by an assortment of schools, and the Teachers' Symposium, which will address the problems of dealing with new technologies like animation for the Internet and various approaches and challenges facing animation historians.

The six-day conference will debut the results of the GSTA recently released Economic Impact Study, a comprehensive examination of the quantitative and qualitative factors that affect how large format films are produced, distributed and exhibited. The conference will also feature up to 12 new giant screen films and 4 short films and will introduce a nightly "wrap party" for attendees to network and expound on the events of the day. Other conference favorites will include Films-In-Development and Films-In-Progress, Technical Sessions, Roundtables, Developing Members Workshop, and the GSTA Achievement Awards.
The Giant Screen Theater Association is a nonprofit association dedicated to the worldwide growth of the large format film industry by supporting the developers and presenters of giant screen film experiences. MadCat showcases avant-garde experimental and independent films and videos directed by women of all lengths and genres. MadCat is seeking films and videos that challenge the use of sound and image and explore notions of visual storytelling. They accept work of all genres and lengths directed by women. Films can be produced any year and be about any topic. MadCat is currently touring across the country with a portion of last year's festival. The fifth annual festival will take place in September in the Bay Area of Northern California. Exhibition Formats: 35mm, 16mm, Super 8, Beta SP, 3/4", SVHS, VHS. Entry Fee: $10 - $30 sliding scale. Pay what you can afford. International entrants disregard the entry fee.
