The Toronto Animated Image Society will be hosting a storyboarding for animation seminar. Sam Agro, a freelance storyboard artist and an instructor at Studio M, will host the event. Agro has worked in the animation business for over seventeen years. He is currently doing storyboards for Fox Kids' new animated series RIPPING FRIENDS directed by John Kricfalusi of REN AND STIMPY fame. The seminar will take place at 8 pm.

Flashcore, the Los Angeles-based new media users group, will be holding a new media and Internet expo centering on interactivity. The event will start with a product demonstration of Swift3D's Electric Rain. The tutorials will cover beginning Flash interactivity and programming; delivering Flash designs on DVD/DVD-Rom; and interactive storytelling with Flash. Moderated by Roger Vetruba of Toonshoppe Animation, the interactive panels will discuss the future of interactive storytelling.

Yuri Norstein will be presenting videos of his work, discussing his current projects and answering questions from the audience. The event will be in Russian and admission is US$10. The proceeds will go toward the completion of his work-in-progress THE OVERCOAT. The event will take place from 7 - 9 pm.

Yuri Norstein is coming to Georgetown University. Norstein will talk about his life and work, in a program called "Animation & Me." The event is being sponsored by the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies. The event is free to the public and will take place from noon to 2 pm.

Glendale Community College is presenting an evening with Frank Gladstone, who has worked as a professional animator, producer, director, writer and teacher for more than 25 years. Currently, he is head of artistic development at DreamWorks, SKG Animation. Gladstone will go through a step by step critique of the Charlie Chaplin film CITY LIGHTS to determine "what makes a great film great." He will look into the effects of lighting, intensity, background interest, etc., along with a good story. This screening will be the first in a series of classic films that will become part of the "Animation Lecture Series," as good animated films have all the same qualities as a live-action film. The event will have a US$5 admission price and will take place from 7 - 9:30 pm.

The European Union's Cartoon is holding the second Cartoon Masters event of 2000. The conference will discuss the question: animation, video games, Internet -- which tools for which markets? Organized by Mangelis and Cartoon, the forum will try to provide information on the new tools and methods that are shaping the contours of the imaging industries and to provide a group reflection area for professionals on concrete conditions for using innovative technologies. Various themed workshops will discuss sound in animation, 2D/3D integration, animating for the Net, conditions for a multi-format production and new frontiers for animation.

The Digital Media Innovations Conference has a full program dedicated to animation, 3D visualization and multimedia and telecommunications convergence. In animation, the conference will feature seminars on digital technologies, 3D animation software developments, cutting edge of digital visual effects, CG 4 kids' programming, tools for animating the Web, storytelling for the digital age and future opportunities in new media. In 3D visualization, the event will hold discussion on: applied parallel processing and scientific data visualization; virtual reality in education and training; visualization and simulation in engineering; new media and medicine; interactive data exchange; enabling the architects and designers of the future; and HDTV, interactive TV and digital TV. Finally in multimedia, the conference will feature speakers on: leading edge contact centre management; embedded technologies; the Internet; Web design; collaborative authoring for new media; e-business incubation; and network architecture for e-business.

The Victoria Independent Film & Video Festival's goal is to highlight the work of talented burgeoning filmmakers. This year's event will feature a tribute to Canadian animation studio, International Rocketship. Three-days of the festival will be devoted to animation, including an intensive animation workshop. Over 130 features and shorts in narrative, animation, documentary and experimental will be screened at the 10-day festival.

The Art Institute of Los Angeles will present six-time Emmy-winner Phil Roman, who has produced and directed animated series, theatricals and commercials for four decades. The lecture is part of the school's Animation 2000 lecture series that has featured diverse speakers including John Landis, Michael Gagne, Matt Ferro and a host of industry leaders. The event will be held, at no charge, from 7-9 pm. In 1955, Roman officially began his career when he was hired to work as an assistant animator on Disney's SLEEPING BEAUTY. Decades later, Roman formed his own studio, Film Roman Inc. In 1999, Roman began a new company Phil Roman Entertainment.
