A special screening and presentation on the making of the computer animated film "Little Miss Spider" - directed by Diana Walczak and Jeff Kleiser based on the book by David Kirk - will be held at the Scholastic Store in Soho on Saturday, October 6th from 3:00 - 5:00 pm.

David Kirk will read, present his new toys and sign books. Diana Walczak will give a slide presentation on animating Little Miss Spider. The voice of Little Miss Spider, nine-year-old Marichal MacDonald, will make a special appearance.

High Falls Film Festival

Animatus Studio is proud to be a sponsor of the High Falls Film Festival, running October 17-21, 2001 in Rochester, New York. Focusing on women in film, the festival is honoring animator Faith Hubley this year with a retrospective of her independent work. Highlights of the festival include "Independent Spirits: Faith Hubley/John Hubley," a one-hour documentary about the careers of Academy Award-winning animators John and Faith Hubley directed by Sybil DelGaudio; "Faith Hubley:A Selection of Films." This screening will focus on Faith's solo work from the last twenty-six years. Faith will also be hosting a workshop to highlight her working methods and exhibit storyboards for her next film.

On Wednesday, October 17th 2001, The Illinois Institute of Art-Schaumburg will host the second annual ARTimation Festival at the AMC Barrington 30 Theatres, 175 Studio Drive from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. There will be two theatres devoted to the showing of Animation and Multimedia programs.

Work by current students and recent graduates will be showcased in this event, juried by industry representatives including MTV, Film Roman (The Simpsons), Area 51 (The X-Files, Dune the miniseries), and Viacom. Sponsors of the Festival include: Hewlett Packard, UPS, Motion Picture Studios, High Voltage Software/Red Eye Studios, Digital People, and Vicon Motion Systems.

Admission is free to the public.

ILM Director Tom Bertino In Person and A Tribute to Billy Greene

ASIFA-San Francisco presents an evening with ILM Director Tom Bertino. Tom is currently working as animation director for DreamWorks "The Time Machine" He joined ILM in 1986 and has worked on over 40 features. Tom's experimental digital animated 35mm short "Work In Progress" will be screened and he will discuss his latest projects. Sally Cruickshank's "Make Me Psychic" will also be shown. Tom did ink and paint on this film and it was his first professional job. The evening will begin with a tribute to stop-motion animator Billy Greene, who was shot dead in front of his apartment in Emeryville in September. Billy's latest short film "Thought Bubble" has been screened at many prominent film festivals, including Sundance and Annecy. He had worked for Will Vinton Studios and returned to the Bay Area five weeks before he was killed to work on "Phantom Investigators." Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at 7:30pm McBean Auditorium at The Exploratorium (San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts) This event is open to the public and admission is free.

Nightmare Before Christmas - Special Screening

Tim Burton's stop-motion masterpiece, directed by Henry Selick, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS will be screening for two weeks (Oct. 19 - 31) at Hollywood's historic, restored movie palace The El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. This is an annual Halloween tradition. On the first night, Friday Oct. 19th, Jerry Beck will be moderating a panel of guests on stage in a Q & A about working with Tim Burton on NIGHTMARE, VINCENT and FRANKENWEENIE. Special guests will include actress CATHERINE O'HARA (voice of Sally and Shock), Vincent & Frankenweenie Producer RICK HEINRICHS, and Frankenweenie screenwriter LENNY RIPPS. This is a great opportunity to see these contemporary classics on the big screen (In fact, this might just be FRANKENWEENIE'S first theatrical showing in Los Angeles).
