The goal of the Montreal World Film Festival (Montreal International Film Festival) is to encourage cultural diversity and understanding between nations, to foster the cinema of all continents by stimulating the development of quality cinema, to promote filmmakers and innovative works, to discover and encourage new talents, and to promote meetings between cinema professionals from around the world.

The World Film Festival - Montreal 2005 will include the following sections: World Competition, First Films World Competition, Hors Concours (World Greats, out-of competition), Focus on World Cinema (Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania), Documentaries of the World, Tributes, Cinema Under the Stars and Canadian Student Film Festival. The event also contains seminars, workshops and a film market.

The new animated short by Oscar-nominated director Chris Hinton is in the official competition, as well as three other animated shorts from the NFB in the World Greats category. As part of our continued partnership with the festival, the NFB will once again present the Norman McLaren Award in the Canadian Student Film Festival.

Stop Motion is animaton that uses, puppets, claymation, moving lego men etc . Movies like "A Nightmare Before Christmas", "James and the Giant Peach", and shows like "Wallace and Grommit", "Gumby", and "Thunderbirds" all use stop-motion animation.



Learn how to create your own stop-motion animation shorts in this 10 day program. Students will work together on a project that will end with a completed film.



Students completing this workshop will have a demo reel of the finished product, invaluable in applying to arts and animation programs.





Instructor: Jason Thompson

Jason is a well-known stop-motion animator and director.

Adobe Design Achievement Awards

Students in 24 countries will have the opportunity to test their skills in a number of creative endeavors and, perhaps, get a jump-start on their careers with a prestigious award from Adobe Systems.

Adobe has this date issued a call for entries for the sixth annual Adobe Design Achievement Awards for promising students in graphic design, photography, illustration, animation, digital filmmaking and computer arts.

The competition is open to students using Adobe software like Creative Suite 2 for their projects. There will be a total of nine categories. Originality and effectiveness in communicating objectives will be the main criteria for judging, the company said.

Judging will be in May and finalists will be contacted shortly afterwards. Finalists will receive a trip to Toronto for the final awards. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Toronto on July 20. Each winner receives $5,000 in cash and a selection of Adobe products.

Judges include Leslie Beeler of Second Story; Rodolphe Guenoden of Dreamworks Animation; Diti Katona of Concrete Design Communications; Masamichi Udagawa of Antenna Design New York Inc; and Jan Wilker of karlssonwilker, inc.

International Conference on Asian Comics, Animation and Gaming 2006

The goal of the ACAG 2006 conference is to provide an international forum for presenting recent research on the emerging cultural markets in China and the Asian countries and to investigate the transnational issues of Asian cultural products, focusing on comics,animation and digital games in relation with the global world. The purpose of the conference is to promote scholarship and intellectual engagement between academics and cultural production professionals on the conference themes and topics from various backgrounds. This conference will be held from May 18th to May 19th, 2006 at York University in Toronto, Canada. Papers that explore critical, philosophical and creative issues on Asian comics, animation, and digital games by drawing on the methodological and conceptual knowledge from a variety of disciplines are invited. The deadline for receiving abstracts is January 15, 2005. Each abstract should be no longer than 200 words.
