Author Michael Barrier, publisher of Funnyworld magazine, will discuss classic animation and screen rare examples of the greatest cartoons of the 1930s and 1940s in 16mm and 35mm in conjunction with the publication of the revised paperback edition of his award-winning book, Hollywood Cartoons: American Animation in the Golden Age (Oxford University Press) at the American Film Institute in the Ted Ashley Screening Room on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 3 pm. The American Film Institute is located at 2021 N. Western Avenue in Los Angeles. Admission is $2 for ASIFA-Hollywood members and $10 for non-members. Admission is free if you buy an ASIFA-Hollywood membership at the door.

This is a free event for members of ASIFA-Hollywood and their guests. John Truby will be teaching his famous 22-step Story Structure Class in New York City at DV Dojo. Day One will tackle finding the perfect structure for your story, creating the single driving force, three variations to classic story structure, seven steps to a great premise, four requirements of a good hero, three character traits to avoid, using desire and motive, five major character changes, four keys to the perfect opponent and writing characters who aren't like you. Day Two will focus on 22 building blocks in every great script, tricks of Hollywood's most popular genres, pacing by character growth -- not page number, stacking, creating the visual world, using the subplot, building the reveals, creating the strong middle and writing three-track dialogue. On October 6, Truby will be teaching a special genre class. Topics include: what each genre really means under the surface, three ways to handle genre and which one is best, how each genre varies from classic structure, the crucial question for each story form, key structure points for each genre, the difference between crime stories, detective stories and thrillers, the central theme of each genre, mixing genres: the key strategy for blockbuster films and bending the genre rules for originality.
