This festival will present films that are ousted from traditional distribution venues and can rarely be seen in movie theaters or on TV, including animation films based on techniques expanding the limits of animation. The program includes East-West meetings; photographic and fine art exhibitions; contemporary, improvised, alternative and folk music concerts; as well as theater, performance and dance works.

The New York Animation Festival, in collaboration with Video Lounge, presents Outer Limits, an international series of short animation, experimental, narrative and documentary film and video. Outer Limits will present a vast array of independent and innovative work from more than a dozen countries. An international program featuring animated films by Amy Kravitz (ROOST AND THE TRAP), Dana Behrman (PIGLATIN), Avi Katz (LAST WALTZ IN NEW YORK) and Sylvie Bringas and Orly Yadim (SILENCE) will be held on May 16 at 7:30 pm and May 18 at 9:30 pm. Also a program of new animation from Australia will be screened on June 2 at 7 pm, presented by Melbourne animator Rhian Hinkley. A program of recent Swiss Animation on June 16 at 9 pm and a retrospective of Swiss animator Georges Schwizgebel on June 17 at 7 pm will be presented by Fantoche International Animation Festival.

First Bristol Animated Encounters

A weekend of animation is coming to Bristol and the home town toon house Aardman Animations' will open the first Bristol Animated Encounters with a sneak peak of the animated feature film, CHICKEN RUN. Animated Encounters is supported by DreamWorks SKG, Torribles, Aardman Animations, WESTEC, BBC Bristol, Bristol City Council, Bristol Tourism and Conference Bureau, A for Animation and Farrington Lewis. The first night will conclude with "Outrageous Animation Cabaret" featuring the regurgitating razor blades and anal fire breathing act of The Incredible Blood Brothers, plus cartoons from the dark side. At 11 am on Saturday, May 20, "Children's" will screen new kids cartoons including the BAA award-winning episodes of MAISIE and FOXBUSTERS. On Saturday at 1 pm, "International Round-Up 1 & 2" will highlight world class animated shorts, including many UK premiers such as Charlie Ramos' THE METAMORPHOSIS and Australian Annette Trevitt's COLLEEN SPENCER. The program will be repeated on Sunday, May 21 at 7 pm. "Home Run/Bristol Animation Selection" will be presented at 3 pm on Saturday, May 20. The screening will feature some of the earliest Aardman films such as Bill Mather's THE AUDITION, Nick Park's CREATURE COMFORTS, and Peter Lord's MOVING WAR STORY, plus local Bristol productions like THE SECRET ADVENTURES OF TOM THUMB, directed by Dave Borthwick of bolexbrothers and Andy Wyatt's SID THE SIDESPLITTER. At 7 pm on Saturday, "Brit Flicks/British Animation Selection" will feature world premiers from Brian Wood (SCHOOL DISCO), Sandra Ensby (FAST SPIN FLING), Sam Morrison (EMMA 18), Bob Godfrey (TWO OFF THE CUFF), Mark Baker (JOLLY ROGER) and Paul Bush (THE ALBATROSS). At 9 pm on Saturday, the festival will present "Watch with Mother," a retrospective of 1970s TV animation. Kicking off Sunday, May 21's schedule will be "British Animation Award Winners 2000," including this year's BAFTA winning THE MAN WITH THE BEAUTIFUL EYES by Jonathan Hodgson; Peter Peake's HUM DRUM; bolexbrothers' ad for Nestea by Dave Borthwick; and Richard Goleszowski's ROBBIE THE REINDEER. On Sunday at 1 pm, the festival will feature a sneak peak of the 35 mm release of FANTASIA 2000. "Desert Island Flicks" at 3 pm on Sunday will feature Phill Jupitus' selection of cartoon classics that he would want with him if stranded on a desert island. Starting at noon on Sunday, "Interact Animation Live and Online" will allow guests the chance to check out the latest animated Web sites, followed by a Chill Out Party, from 7 to 11 pm, when the best will be projected on a big screen.

The Singapore Animation Fiesta 2000 will highlight creativity in animation. The festival will feature screenings of top animation from around the world as well as workshops and forums. Sponsored by Temasek Polytechnic, the event will feature screenings ranging from Toei, Japan's largest animation studio, to Betty Boop, and from Aardman animation to the edgy wonders of Barry Purves. Workshops during the festival will center on stop-motion with clay, 3D Studio Max, creating human models in Maya and Anime-style drawing. Barry Purves, Digital FilmWorks' Chris Leone and Digital Anvil's Chris Olivia will all be conducting master classes. The forums will focus on computer games, video game modeling techniques and violence in anime.

DancesWithFilms is a competitive event featuring a line-up of more than a dozen full-length narrative films and sixteen narrative shorts. DWF's mission is to open a venue for new and upcoming filmmakers to present their work without the fear of politics overshadowing their screen time. The criteria for entries are: 1. Is the person attached able to raise financing (even small sums) at any point based solely on the "name"? 2. Is the person attached able to open doors that might otherwise stay closed? (They do not exclude "working" persons in the industry.) The film must have been completed no later then January 1998.
