Chris Wehner, editor-n-chief of SCREENWRITER'S MONTHLY, author of SCREENWRITING ON THE INTERNET: RESEARCHING, WRITING & SELLING YOUR SCRIPT ON THE WEB (2000) and WHO WROTE THAT MOVIE? SCREENWRITING IN REVIEW: 2000-2002 will be conducting an online writing workshop entitled, "Writing The Screenplay 101." Classes meet every Monday for four weeks from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm (MST). Students will accomplish at least 10 pages, not exceeding 30 pages, of script development. Students will learn the basics of screenwriting and ascertain enough knowledge to continue writing their screenplay and finish. ZOOLOOK Entertainment (the creators of FlashTV) and (mt) Media Temple, Inc. proudly present The Greatest Story Never Told, a digital storytelling competition sponsored by Macromedia, with additional support from 5inch, Animation World Network (AWN), Alien Skin Software, Bulaja Naklada, Computer Arts, Discreet, Electric Rain, Expression, Final Draft, FlashAnts, Friends of Ed, Hewlett-Packard, Killersound, .net, New Riders, Peachpit Press, SXSW Interactive, TechNow and Well Vetted.

The Greatest Story Never Told competition is designed to encourage and promote the use of Macromedia Flash MX to produce original stories for the web, video, television, film and interactive entertainment. Artists are given three months to produce an original story using Flash MX or any 3rd party software that exports to the .swf platform. Their story must be between 2:00 and 20:00 minutes in length and based on one of the FlashTV genres (www.flashtv.com). The competition is open to novice and intermediate storytellers worldwide! Deadline for submissions is January 15, 2004. Winners announced February 25, 2004.

AnimationHQ is hosting a chat with talented and veteran animator, Heidi Guedel. She spent time at Disney, Don Bluth Productions and Warner Brothers. She has worked on many Feature Animation titles including The Secret of NIMH, The Fox and the Hound, An American Tail, and Quest for Camelot. In addition, she did character layout for Rough Draft Studios (Futurama), worked in multimedia at Vortex Media Arts, and worked on videogame animation for the classic 80's laserdisc games "Dragon's Lair" and "Space Ace". Softimage launched its Student Animation Contest 2004, which seeks to recognize the leading talent from up-and-coming animators worldwide. "Be The Hero" invites both full and part-time students to submit a piece of animation, which could win them one of three two-part prizes. Top prizes include a production license of the SOFTIMAGE|XSI software, with one year's maintenance for the winner, plus Academic versions of the industry's leading nonlinear software system for the winner's home institution. First prize is a production license of SOFTIMAGE|XSI Advanced software and 10 seats of SOFTIMAGE|XSI Academic Edition software for their educational institution. Entrants must submit a rendered piece of animation that includes a coherent narrative. This can be a story, a spoof of a commercial or a social statement and must run for a duration of 10 seconds to a maximum of two minutes, including all titles and credits. The piece will be judged on its visual (lighting, texturing, modeling) and storytelling (animation and camera moves) sophistication. The judges will be paying particular attention to the quality of the modeling, animation and rendering, and how effectively each serves the story.
