The Academy Dives into The Abyss

THE ABYSS, the deep-sea epic renowned for its pioneering digital water effects and sophisticated underwater photography and sound recording, will be screened at a special 20th anniversary event by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Tuesday, June 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. This screening will premiere a newly struck 35mm print from the Academy Film Archive. Presented by the Academy's Science and Technology Council, the event will be hosted by film historian and author Eric Lichtenfeld and will feature an onstage panel discussion on the role motion picture science and technology played in shaping the film. Guests will include members of the film's Oscar-winning visual effects team, John Bruno, Dennis Skotak and Hoyt Yeatman, and nominees Mikael Salomon (Cinematography) and Lee Orloff (Sound) as well as John Knoll, the movie's computer graphics designer who specialized in the development of the Pseudopod creature elements. THE ABYSS stars Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and tells the story of crew members on an underwater oil rig during the Cold War who are enlisted to help rescue an American submarine, and the bizarre, mysterious force they discover living in the deep. Established in 2003 by the Academy's Board of Governors, the Science and Technology Council provides a forum for the exchange of information, promotes cooperation among diverse technological interests within the industry, sponsors publications, fosters educational activities and preserves the history of science and technology of motion pictures. Tickets to THE ABYSS are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. GONE WITH THE WIND, the 1939 Best Picture winner, will kick off the New York presentation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' latest screening series, "Hollywood's Greatest Year: The Best Picture Nominees of 1939," on Saturday, June 20, at 12:30 p.m. at the Academy's Theater in New York City. Robert Osborne, television host, columnist and Academy biographer, will host the event. "For a number of years, the Academy nominated 10 films, not 5, for Best Picture," said Osborne. "While there are many great years in terms of filmmaking, what is really astounding about 1939 is that so many of the movies made that year have become genuine classics." The series will continue through mid-October and showcase all 10 Best Picture nominees from 1939. Screenings will be on Monday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 12:30 p.m., or Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with Osborne as host. The Los Angeles Film Festival, held annually for ten days in June, showcases the best of American and international cinema. Drawing on an expected attendance of 85,000, the festival provides films with the opportunity to be embraced by the public and discovered by the industry. More than 100 feature films -- narrative and documentary-are featured in the festival, alongside gala premieres, panels and seminars, short film programs, music video showcases, free outdoor screenings, live musical performances, and unique signature events. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present "A Tribute to Dick Smith: The Godfather of Special Makeup Effects," on Wednesday, June 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Six-time Oscar-winning makeup artist Rick Baker will host the evening, which will be attended by Smith himself and will feature a panel discussion including writer-director Guillermo del Toro, actor Hal Holbrook and makeup artists Greg Cannom, Kazuhiro Tsuji and Andrew Clement, among others. The evening will highlight Smith's innovative career, which began in 1945 when he became NBC's first makeup man. Smith is known for his makeup artistry on such films as THE GODFATHER, THE EXORCIST and TAXI DRIVER, but it was his work with Paul LeBlanc on AMADEUS (1984), that finally earned him an Oscar. Edinburgh International Film Festival is delighted to welcome American animator Don Hertzfeldt. He will introduce a retrospective of his work at the Cameo Cinema on the 21st of June at 6pm, featuring the UK premier of his latest film I AM SO PROUD OF YOU, the eagerly anticipated continuation of EVERYTHING WILL BE OK. Following the screening, Hertzfeldt will speak about his films. In all they have won over a hundred awards, including Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Award. Included in the programme are BILLY'S BALLOON, INTERMISSION IN THE THIRD DIMENSION, THE MEANING OF LIFE and REJECTED. Other animations playing at this year's EIFF are Adam Elliott's feature MARY AND MAX and Tomm Moore's THE SECRET OF KELLS. Two jam-packed international programmes of short animated films are also on offer, as well as the McLaren Programmes for British Animation. The Magic of Harry Potter Tour in U.K. in June

To celebrate the forthcoming release of HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE, the sixth installment in the Harry Potter series, Warner Bros. Pictures have created a magical moving tour which will visit various UK destinations between the 13th and 22nd June 2009 (full list of destinations below).

Entrance to the tour will be for competition winners only. The winners will walk through the Harry Potter experience and have the chance to see a selection of the original production sets, some of the iconic costumes as worn by Harry Potter and Dumbledore and props that will include an original Firebolt broomstick.

All winners will have the opportunity to perform a spell "on-camera" and this will be entered into a competition to win the ultimate prize. One lucky winner will have an unforgettable film experience: They will win the chance to visit Leavesden Studios in England to see the Harry Potter sets and a chance to appear in one of the final Harry Potter films.
