THE 84TH ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS

FEDRUARY 26TH AT 7:00

Each January, the entertainment community and film fans around the world turn their attention to the Academy Awards. Interest and anticipation builds to a fevered pitch leading up to the Oscar telecast in February, when hundreds of millions of movie lovers tune in to watch the glamorous ceremony and learn who will receive the highest honors in filmmaking.

The Oscars reward the previous year’s greatest cinema achievements as determined by some of the world’s most accomplished motion picture artists and professionals. The Academy’s roughly 6,000 members vote for the Oscars using secret ballots, which are tabulated by the international auditing firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers. The auditors maintain absolute secrecy until the moment the show’s presenters open the envelopes and reveal the winners on live television.

Expect hundreds of new shorts, animation films, videos, documentaries and innovative cross-overs, selected out of thousands of international entries. The festival is a round-up of a great year in cinema, but also looks at the future. Besides being a platform for the short film medium, it also acts as a major talent hunt, where tomorrow’s filmmakers are able to present their first professional productions.

Festival Highlights

EUROPE IN SHORTS: Sundance, Clermont Ferrand, Regensburg, Hamburg, Locarno… our festival team travelled all over the world in search of the very best European short films. Once home, we go through over 2000 entries and select only forty, the cream of the crop of European shorts. The European competition shows films from over 17 countries.  In the non-competitive programmes dozens of new European shorts will be screened, in sections as "The Labo", "Short Films for Children", "Animation Nations" and "Finest Irish Shorts".MILESTONES IN SHORT FILM HISTORY: Milestones in Short Film History” is a collection of the most influential short films made throughout a century of cinematic history. It entails thirty movies produced between 1900 en 2000 that are typical of certain movements and evolutions in movie history or that introduced new techniques, procedures, styles, genres or directors. Together with the programma, the ISFFL presents a publication with the same title (Dutch-English) in witch all films are discussed.SHORT FILM COMPETITION:The ISFFL organises a Flemish and European Short Film Competition in which audience awards and jury awards are being granted. Besides the ISFFL awards the Flanders Audiovisual Fund grants 5 “Wildcards” for new Flemish film talent. The value of the prizes reaches almost 300.000 euro. The winners are announced at the award ceremony, on the last day of the festival, December 10thINDUSTRY ACTIVITIES: Each year, the International Short Film Festival welcomes countless young filmmakers and film professionals from all over the world. motion 2011

Starts: Oct 09, 2011 - Ends: Oct 14, 2011
Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
Website: http://motion.motion.tv/

motion is our annual event. Hundreds of brilliant minds – pros in the film, broadcast, and game industries – all coming together to share unique ideas that revolutionize the industry, change the way they look at their work and serve as inspiration for one another.

It all starts off with motionfest (10.9.11) – our pre-conference event where you’ll experience a full-day of rapid-fire tips, tricks, and technique sessions.

Then at motion, (10.10.11-10.11.11) we’ll take you on a mind-bending two day ride – what we refer to as the 'TED talks' of our industry. motion speakers are the top creative thinkers and innovators in motion graphics, animation, and vfx. A concept borrowed from TED, each speaker is on stage for 20 minutes giving the talk of their life on subjects they’re passionate about. Talks that revolutionize the industry. Talks that revitalize the creative muse.

The audience becomes a integral player in the motion experience. Utilizing the latest technology, participants are encouraged to join in the open discussions provided after each segment. It’s their turn to share their expertise and insight in this process of innovation.

Night time is all about reconnecting with peers and meeting new friends – on neutral turf. It’s a remarkable opportunity to actually get to know your competition. Sure – you’ve met on the ‘battlefield’, pitching to win the next major project. But as so many past attendees have told us – it wasn’t until motion that they were actually able to meet and interact with their peers and get to know them – as people. Did we mention there will be drinks? Party on!

Want to attend two great events, but your company only has the budget for one? We’ve got the solution!

Immediately following motion, join us for The Adobe Post Show October 12-14th – 2.5 days of Adobe Production Premium workflow sessions designed specifically for pros in the film, broadcast, and game industries.

motion is a unique experience where you not only reconnect with peers – you reconnect with the reason you got into this business to begin with.

Rushes Soho Shorts Festival 2011

Starts: Jul 20, 2011 - Ends: Jul 29, 2011
Submission Deadline: Apr 11, 2011
Location: London, United Kingdom
Website: http://sohoshorts.wordpress.com/

We are a not-for-profit festival celebrating the wealth of talent working across all genres of short film including live action drama, documentary, animation, music video, and broadcast design including online or mobile content, title sequences, and idents.

The work of newcomers and established filmmakers is promoted by screening work at cinemas, screening rooms and cafes throughout Soho and London’s West End.

We consider a short film to be under 12minutes, the time limit for most our competitive categories but we also consider longer short format work in our Long Form selection which includes work up to 30 minutes in length.

Our annual activities centre around a 10 day festival (2o to 29 July 2011) where the work of both established filmmakers and newcomers is viewed and judged on a completely level platform. These are joined by UK and international programmes and guest curators providing a total of 24 film programmes (each screend 3 times) and 45 plus events within the festival.

The competitive categories are:

The International AwardThe Long Form AwardThe Documentary AwardThe Short Film AwardThe Animation AwardThe Music Video AwardThe Broadcast Design AwardThe Newcomers Award

Through the Autumn and Spring we curate programmes of work at other festivals and events, while also encouraging production companies and organisations to view content from the most recent festival. Hopefully resulting in those filmmakers being invited to pitch on new projects and jobs as they arise.

Productions entered consistently feature a host of recognisable names and faces alongside gifted ‘unknowns’ giving everyone the opportunity to see, unmistakably, the british aptitiude for filmmaking and showcasing global filmmaking talent. Sue Johnston, James Fox, Mackenzie Crook, Dita Von Teese, David Tennant, David Thewlis, Saffron Burrows, Jimi Mistry, David Soul, Patsy Palmer, Jack Dee, Phil Jupitus, Natalie Press and Michael Sheen are but a few of the people who give their time, often for free, to play characters in these films providing an interest for a broader public audience.

At the conclusion of the festival the Rushes Awards are held to  announce the most acclaimed production from each category. Judges ranging across the creative industries vote for their prefered film, the 3 finalists from each category being invited to attend to hear the announcement, with all attendees then invited to celebrate and commiserate at an after party.

Rushes Soho Shorts Festival is now calling for submissions

Rushes Soho Shorts is now calling for submissions for their 13th celebration of everything short. Renowned for maintaining a significant bridge between the independent and commercial filmmaking communities, the annual not-for-profit festival celebrates the previous year’s best director in each of eight competition categories.

Work should have been completed between 1st January 2010 and April 2011.

Films can be submitted up until 21st April with the shortlisted films being announced early in June.
