The Victoria Independent Film & Video Festival's goal is to highlight the work of talented burgeoning filmmakers. This year's event will feature a tribute to Canadian animation studio, International Rocketship. Three-days of the festival will be devoted to animation, including an intensive animation workshop. Over 130 features and shorts in narrative, animation, documentary and experimental will be screened at the 10-day festival.

The Toronto Worldwide Short Film Festival has changed its name to the Canadian Film Centre's Worldwide Short Film Festival. Founded by Brenda Sherwood in 1994, the festival was acquired by the Canadian Film Centre in 2000. The Canadian Film Centre is Canada's foremost institution for advanced training and production in film, television and new media. In addition to competition screenings of international and Canadian shorts, the festival will feature panels, symposiums, special presentations, retrospectives and gala screenings. The festival market offers an opportunity for filmmakers and industry representatives to connect, converse and conduct business. Over CA$40,000 (US$26,450) in cash and prizes will be awarded to winners, including the Sun Life Financial Best Canadian Short Film award of CA$25,000 (US$16,531).

TERRES EN VUES/LAND InSIGHTS, an association created to promote native culture, is presenting the 11th Edition of the Montreal First Peoples' Festival. The event highlights films made by American natives and about native issues and topics. Selected films and videos will be in competition, unless the filmmaker wishes them to be screened only. Awards will be given on June 17, during a special event. To be eligible for competition, the work must have been produced no more than 3 years before the festival. Awards are given for the artistic quality of the works showing originality in terms of content and style, a skillful sense of film or media expression and corresponding deeply to the soul of the First Peoples.

The Writers Guild of Canada and YTV will conduct classes on turning stories into screenplays and film critics will teach children how to write film critiques.

The 1st entry deadline (March 8, 2001) is for programs aired between May 1 - August 31, 2000. The 2nd entry deadline (March 22, 2001) is for programs aired between September 1 - November 30, 2000. The 3rd entry deadline (April 5, 2001) is for programs aired between December 1, 2000 - April 30, 2001. The opening gala will take place on October 27, with the industry gala following on October 28. The awards ceremony will take place on Monday, October 29.
