From December 3-10, film fans flock to Leuven. For the 17th year straight, the International Short Film Festival Leuven offers a broad and very colorful selection of the best short film has to offer. Expect hundreds of new shorts, animation films, videos, documentaries and innovative cross-overs, selected out of thousands of international entries. The festival is a round-up of a great year in cinema, but also looks at the future. Besides being a platform for the short film medium, it also acts as a major talent hunt, where tomorrow’s filmmakers are able to present their first professional productions.

Festival Highlights

EUROPE IN SHORTS: Sundance, Clermont Ferrand, Regensburg, Hamburg, Locarno… our festival team travelled all over the world in search of the very best European short films. Once home, we go through over 2000 entries and select only forty, the cream of the crop of European shorts. The European competition shows films from over 17 countries.  In the non-competitive programmes dozens of new European shorts will be screened, in sections as "The Labo", "Short Films for Children", "Animation Nations" and "Finest Irish Shorts".MILESTONES IN SHORT FILM HISTORY: Milestones in Short Film History” is a collection of the most influential short films made throughout a century of cinematic history. It entails thirty movies produced between 1900 en 2000 that are typical of certain movements and evolutions in movie history or that introduced new techniques, procedures, styles, genres or directors. Together with the programma, the ISFFL presents a publication with the same title (Dutch-English) in witch all films are discussed.SHORT FILM COMPETITION:The ISFFL organises a Flemish and European Short Film Competition in which audience awards and jury awards are being granted. Besides the ISFFL awards the Flanders Audiovisual Fund grants 5 “Wildcards” for new Flemish film talent. The value of the prizes reaches almost 300.000 euro. The winners are announced at the award ceremony, on the last day of the festival, December 10thINDUSTRY ACTIVITIES: Each year, the International Short Film Festival welcomes countless young filmmakers and film professionals from all over the world. This edition boasts quite a few professional activities this year: an info session about Crowdfunding (organised by MEDIA Desk Flanders and SACD), a 2-day seminar about the Short Film in Flanders, a lecture by the Danish-American short film professor Richard Raskin “Story Design in Short fiction Film” and many more.

MITV - International TV Market is the first independent international market for TV productions in Latin America. The event is a place where people who produce, distribute or exhibit series, documentaries, animations or motion pictures can connect. The event comprises two days of meetings where TV stations, cable channels, independent producers, distributors, government and international guests will be able to meet and exchange ideas, watch finished programs and ongoing projects, and discuss the issues that are moving local and global markets.

Production companies with completed or in-progress projects can present them at MITV Screenings, a special show for buyers, and producers. Producers, distributors and broadcasters can attend pitching sessions of an unusual kind, with the participation of producers who do not normally have access to top-tier international markets. The well-known and popular Brazil Programming & Production Forum, to be held this year in parallel with MITV. Attendees will have access to first-class presentations and debates in the company of highly qualified professionals from Brazil, the U.S., Canada, France, Sweden, Spain, Portugal and elsewhere. The program covers topics such as international distribution, co-production rules, regional production, new media, and others of extreme relevance to producers, distributors and exhibitors of TV programming.

The MostraMundo is an international audiovisual festival that ranges from competitive and non-competitive exhibitions to courses, workshops, lectures, and debates about the contemporary cinematographic production and market.

Anima Mundi is the International Animation Festival of Brazil, which brings to the Brazilian audience the best selection of films and videos from around the world. Golden Sheaf Awards or the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival offer awards in various categories which include Children's Production, Documentray Over 30 Minutes, Documentray Under 30 Minutes, and Drama Under 60 minutes. Films must be 16mm, BETACAM, BETACAM SP NTSC or VHS NTSC. The entry fee for the competition is CA$100. All films entered must have been completed between March 13, 1999 and February 10, 2000.

The National Film Board of Canada is holding an open house of their new facilities. The event gives the public a chance to meet the filmmakers and staff. The NFB will feature screenings, studio tours and receptions on Monday from 2-6 pm and on Tuesday from 10 am - 5 pm. Screening facilities will be available for visitors to screen their own work as well.

The Montreal International Festival of New Cinema & New Media (FCMM) will screen 72 features, 93 shorts and 50 new media presentations in a celebration of cutting edge filmmaking. Besides the screenings the event will hold tributes and seminars including a salute to animators Mich

The 4th Annual Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival is an event that embraces creative, strange and entertaining films. Feature films, short films, videos and documentaries are all accepted. All films must be independently produced with an Asian/Asian North American in a key creative role. The festival strongly encourages first-time and emerging directors to submit projects.

The 30th edition Montreal International Festival of New Cinema & New Media (FCMM) will screen features, shorts and new media presentations in a celebration of cutting-edge filmmaking. Besides the screenings, the event will hold tributes and seminars. An international jury will determine awards. The events will take place at the state of the art Daniel Langlois Foundation complex.
