The New York International Children's Film Festival is one of the top showcases of new film for young people. The competitive fest screens 50 new works, shorts and features, plus retrospectives to an audience of 12,000 ages 3-18, parents, filmmakers and media execs. The 8th New York Digital Salon is an international juried exhibition of prints, sculptures, interactive installments, performances, animation, digital video and Internet art made with the computer. The jury will pick 85 entries from over 800 applicants to be showcased in the exhibit. After its run in New York, the exhibit plans to tour Europe and Asia. Previously, it has traveled to Milan, Italy; Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante, Valladolid and the Canary Islands, Spain; and Lisbon, Portugal. The event will be kicked off with a reception on November 6 from 6 - 8 pm. The Visual Arts Museum is open Monday - Wednesday and Friday from 9 am to 6:30 pm, Thursday from 9 am to 8 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm.

Cinemagic 2000, Northern Ireland's International Film Festival for Young People, is an international conference and fair exploring the nature of entertainment and education for young people in the digital age. Roy E. Disney, vice chairman of the Disney Corp., Myra Langdon Riesman, pioneer of original broadband Internet programming, and Chris Deering, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, Europe, head the list of speakers. The 44th San Francisco International Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the Americas. Narrative features are eligible for participation only if the film has never been screened in the San Francisco Bay Area. A feature is over 60 minutes long and must have finished production within the past two years. First features by emerging filmmakers that do not have a U.S. distributor at the time of the festival are eligible for the festival's US$10,000 SKYY Prize for Outstanding Filmmaking. The SKYY Prize winner will be announced at the Festival's Awards Brunch on May 3, 2001. Last year's festival competition drew nearly 1600 entries from 58 countries. The competition is comprised of 29 categories in four divisions: Film & Video, for independently produced documentaries, short narratives, shorts for children and animation; Television, for current commercial, non-commercial and cable television production; New Visions, for experimental works that challenge the language of film and video and where personal expression and aesthetic exploration are the primary concerns; and Bay Area Film & Video, for works that reflect the rich selection of documentaries and shorts that have established Northern California as a major center for independent production.

Penton Media's Internet World Media & Entertainment Festival (ME Festival) highlights live-action films, animation, Web commercials, Web series and experimental works under 15 minutes in length. Winners will be announced March 13, 2001, during the two-day Internet World D2M2 Spring Conference in Los Angeles. Selection will go live February 7 at www.internetworldmefestival.com. Viewers, who log on, can vote for an Audience Award of their favorite short. Filmmakers will vie for five prizes that include cash and all-expense paid trips to national and international Internet World 2001 conference sites. Entry fees and deadlines are US$40 by November 4; $60 by November 15; and $75 by 5 pm on December 4.
