Attention animators! The 10th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival 2009 will once again be showcasing animated short films produced by animators of Asian ethnicities in a 90-minute all-animation program. All forms of animation (traditional, claymation, stop-motion, flash, CGI, etc) will be accepted for consideration into this competitive festival. Films by all animators pertaining to Asian issues and themes will also be considered. Only DVD formats are accepted for consideration. A Best Animated Short Film Award will be awarded with prizes to be determined. The year 2009 will be SDAFF's 10th year of celebrating the best in Asian Cinema in sunny San Diego. Last year, SDAFF screened over 130 films in eight days with many industry celebrities in attendance. The all-animation program was a resounding success with 21 animated shorts in the official selection. MEAT DAYS, by Joe Hsieh took the Best Animated Short Award. Help make SDAFF a success again by submitting your animation and spreading the word to your friends and associates who may also be interested.

ANIMA'09 will take place in the city of Cordoba, Argentina, from October 8 through 10, 2009. The festival is organized by the Centro Experimental de Animacion and the Secretaria de Extension Universitaria, National University of Cordoba. This fifth edition of the ANIMA will be dedicated to exploring the concept of Identity Traits. Therefore, we open the following: -- Call for entries, for short and feature animation films of every genre and topic. Special interest is granted to those films where the filmmaker's expressive intention stands out from marketing requirements; and also to school productions. Asolo Art Film Festival 28th Edition

The festival is conceived and organised by the cultural association A.I.A.F. (Asolo International Art Festival). Starting with the 28th edition A.I.A.F will work together with the Gallery San Fedele in Milano. The contest is divided into six sections: -- Films On Art for works on art; -- Artist's Biographies for works of historical reconstruction and critical interpretation on personalities from the world of art and music; -- Films On Architecture & Design for works on architecture, urbanism and design relating to history, movements, main personalities, works and projects; -- Video Art & Computer Art for works using electronics or computer technologies as a method of direct artistic expression; -- Productions By Schools Of Cinema related to art and music, produced by schools of cinema, specialized higher education institutes and universities; -- Harmony And Territory documenting works for the harmonious development of the territory and its contradictions, increasing the value of potential and resources with respect for culture and the environment. Only works produced after January 1, 2007 are eligible for the contest. The works must fall into one of the six sections previously described and it must be indicated on the entry-form. The selection committee reserves the right to move a work to another section, if it seems to fit more appropriately. The participation is free of charge.

Downtown Film Fest - L.A. - 2009

The second annual Downtown Film Festival - Los Angeles (DFFLA), the only dedicated film festival in the historic core of the Entertainment Capital of the World, will be held August, 12-22, 2009. The festival doubles in size to 10 days from last year's inaugural event with a series of film screenings of Hollywood, independent and classic films, lectures, panel discussions, exhibits, and parties and receptions, all celebrating downtown L.A.'s renaissance. Filmmakers may submit films for screening consideration beginning today and until the final deadline of July 15. The 2009 Downtown Film Festival is being presented by the AT&T Center, arts>Brookfield Properties and the GRAMMY Museum at L.A. Live!, with additional sponsors to be announced in the coming weeks. The festival will be headquartered at LBA Realty's AT&T Center (formerly, the Transamerica Center) in downtown L.A.'s exciting South Park district. In addition to providing the festival's main screening venue, (a newly renovated 500-seat theater with state-of-the-art video projection equipment), the AT&T Center will be the location of the festival's 5,000-square-foot Cinema Lounge, located on the southwest corner of the AT&T Center at Olive and 12th St. The Cinema Lounge at the AT&T Center will be a beehive of activity during the festival that will include nightly parties and receptions, panel discussions and art exhibitions as well housing the festival box office. The GRAMMY Museum, located at L.A. Live!, will partner with the festival to present a series of music documentary films and live musical performances at The Museum. Roger M. Mayer will serve once again as the festival's programming director. The entry form for this year's Rushes Soho Shorts Festival can now be downloaded at www.sohoshorts.com. Celebrating the previous year's best director in each of the six competition categories Short Film, Animation, Documentary, Music Video, Newcomer and Broadcast Design, the festival has built a phenomenal following and maintains a significant bridge between the independent and commercial film making communities. 2009 includes additional out-of-competition programs highlighting work from abroad along with numerous guest programs showcasing amazing work produced in the U.K. and overseas. The 10-day event will also see a large range of seminars, lectures, networking events, receptions, BBQs, boat parties and live music performances. The festival provides many programs and events for free, intending to encourage, inspire and promote talented filmmakers to the public and the huge number of production companies and creative organizations in and around London and the U.K. In 2008, post festival, the finalist's films and selections of work from the festival shortlist were screened not only to Ad agencies, festivals and film organizations in London but also at events in Denmark, Australia, USA, Turkey, and Jersey (to name a few). Academy Ventures into Space with NASA Atlantis Crew

Exploring the relationship between NASA and motion pictures, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present "Astronaut as Filmmaker," featuring Commander Scott Altman and the crew of the STS-125 shuttle mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope, on Tuesday, July 14, at 8 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The program will be hosted by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel and Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor John Dykstra. Presented by the Academy's Science and Technology Council, the event will include clips from the astronauts' recent 13-day mission on the space shuttle Atlantis and explore the challenges and revelations of filming in space with digital and IMAX 3D cameras. The astronauts trained at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston to operate the special cameras, and during the voyage they documented work that is considered by many to be some of the most challenging ever undertaken in space. Established in 2003 by the Academy's Board of Governors, the Science and Technology Council provides a forum for the exchange of information, promotes cooperation among diverse technological interests within the industry, sponsors publications, fosters educational activities and preserves the history of science and technology of motion pictures. Tickets to "Astronaut as Filmmaker" are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID.
