Maya is the next stage in 3D animation and effects software. This course will provide an introduction to using Maya to create computer animations. Students will be given a comprehensive introduction to the various components of the Maya software package; including Modeling, Animating, Rendering, and Lighting. An introduction to Maya's MEL scripting language will also be given. Academy Award winning Maya 3D animation and effects software is at the forefront of technological innovation. Its development has been inspired by the film and video artists, computer game developers and design professionals who use it daily to create engaging digital imagery, animation and visual effects. Annie Award Volunteers Meetings

ASIFA-Hollywood is putting out a call for volunteers for the upcoming Annie Awards on Feb. 7, 2004. On January 8 at 7:30 pm, the ballot meeting needs volunteers to prepare the ballots for mailing. On January 14 at 7:30 pm, the Annies Volunteer Meeting will address event pre-production, which will include assistance with the program book, coordination of advertising, name badges, signage/layout, printing, juried award recipient coordinators and ballot coordinators. On January 28 at 7:30 pm, the meeting will be discussing day of the event action items and post-production, which will include ticket check-in and name badge distribution, will-call check-in, ushers/seating assistance, program distribution and presenter assistants. LA SIGGRAPH Hosts Visual Effects of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Los Angeles ACM SIGGRAPH and Apple Computer are hosting an event presented by Weta Digital detailing the visual effects of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. The visual effects artists and producers of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING will guide guests through the imposing challenge of creating 1700+ visual effects shots. Speakers will include Jim Rygiel, vfx supervisor; Dean Wright, vfx producer; and Alex Funke, miniatures director of photography. Social hour will begin at 6:30 pm with the presentation starting at 7:30 pm. The event will take place at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, The Leonard H. Goldensen Theatre, 5230 Lankershim Blvd. The event is free to L.A. ACM SIGGRAPH members and $15 for non-members. New members who sign up on-site and pay the $35 annual membership fee (checks or cash only) do not have to pay the admission fee.
