Open exhibition 2011: Animation

28 September – 5 November, Salisbury Arts Centre

CALL FOR ENTRIES

Artists and animators at all stages of their careers are invited to submit animation work for Salisbury Arts Centre’s 2011 Open Exhibition.  A panel of professionals in the field will select the most engaging, inventive and well executed of entries across the spectrum of animation techniques to be shown in the unique setting of Salisbury Arts Centre.  The most popular exhibited works (by public vote) will receive a cash prize.

All over the age of 16 are welcome to apply and multiple applications are accepted.  There are no geographical restrictions.  Individual and group applications are welcome and artists are encouraged to apply.  Entries could be drawn, stop motion, computer generated or even flick books - any medium you choose.  We are looking for recent work with a contemporary and informed approach; your ideas, aesthetic and your way of expressing them are key.

Theme

The theme is ‘animating me’; the animation as a way of expressing or representing yourself, as a self portrait, avatar, or simply your portal on the world – interpret the theme however you like.

What is animation?

The word ‘Animation’ broadly means life or the appearance of life.  It comes from the Latin ‘anima’ or vital force.  Within the context of making ‘an animation’, it is usually the illusion of movement, traditionally created from still images, due to the way the eye and the mind perceive images seen in rapid sequence.  Animations have existed in one form or another for centuries, from early zoetropes to CGI today.

How to apply:

For an application form, e-mail info@salisburyarts.co.uk with ‘Animation Open’ in the subject line, or call 01722 343020.  The completed form should be sent along with your entry.

Digital / video entries should be no longer than 5 minutes in length (excerpts accepted) and submitted on DVD or pen drive in MP (Mpeg) 4 format.  If your final work is made of physical objects, such as a flick book, please send up to 5 Jpeg images or a physical prototype (with SAE if you’d like it returned).

Deadline for entries:  2nd September 2011

N.b. Applications must be received at Salisbury Arts Centre by this date.  We can take no responsibility for entries lost or held up in the post and late entries will not be considered.

Send your entries to:

Animation Open, Salisbury Arts Centre, Bedwin Street, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP1 3UT
