51st International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film

Starts: Oct 27, 2008 - Ends: Nov 02, 2008
Submission Deadline: Jul 18, 2008
Location: Leipzig, Germany
The International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film -- DOK Leipzig -- is the largest German and one of the leading international festivals for artistic documentary and animated films. It was founded in 1955 by the "club of film-makers of the German Democratic Republic" (Club der Filmschaffenden der DDR) under the title "All-German Leipzig Week for Cultural and Documentary Film," as the first independent film festival of the GDR. During the Cold War, the festival was a unique place of encounter and exchange for filmmakers from East and West. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Leipzig Festival has developed into one of the most dynamic festivals for documentary and animated film, providing a high-quality program and - since 2004 - additional industry offers. Artistic animated film is an integral part of the festival for decades and is represented with its own, independent competition since 1995. This "twin-track character" makes Leipzig unique in the festival landscape. Traditionally, the Leipzig Festival stands for films advocating peace and human dignity. In view of its varied and exciting history, it celebrates freedom of mind and speech, as well as pointedly illustrated images. High-quality art house cinema, superbly narrated stories, a critical eye, subtle observation, tracing back history and scrutinizing the "memory of images" shape the Leipzig Festival's character and diversity. Documentary and animation films for DOK Leipzig 2008 can be submitted from now on. The entry form can be filled in online under www.dok-leipzig.de and transmitted straight away. The deadline for applications expires on May 30 2008 (for productions completed by May 1) and on July 18 2008 (for productions completed after May 1). For more information, visit www.dok-leipzig.de.

eDward 2008

Starts: Sep 28, 2008 - Ends: Sep 30, 2008
Submission Deadline: Aug 22, 2008
Location: Frankfurt, Germany
Website: http://www.ed-ward.de
eDward - The Young Filmmaker's Award is the international film competition for young talents up to 30 and decided at the eDIT 11 Filmmaker's Festival. Prove your talent and creativity with a 30-second-film and win prizes up to 2.500 Euro. The competition is open to young filmmakers up to 30 born on or after January 1, 1978. Students, agency juniors and free film-creative especially are called upon worldwide to take part individually or in teams. The theme of this year's competition is "Planet Earth." When James Watt patented his steam engine in 1769 he also laid the foundation stone for the industrial revolution. Since then technology has progressed in leaps and bounds. Whilst people marveled at cars and the railways in 1900, noone would bat an eyelid at a plane or a satellite navigation system today. These wonderful achievements all come at a heavy cost, however. The earth and its atmosphere are no longer holding up to the attacks on them by humankind. We can expect global warming, floods, drought, extinction of species, homelessness and a major economic crisis if we don't change the way we think and take action to help our planet soon. The subject offers plenty of scope for imaginative and creative work. Use live action, 2D or 3D animation, a documentary or science fiction scenario, or a mixture of all of them -- everything is possible. --How do I see the planet today? --What will our planet look like in the future? --What makes our planet worth living on? --What's damaging our planet? --Where in the world is everything still all right? --What can we do to help our planet? --What do politicians need to do now to help it? The awards will be presented at the 11. Filmmaker's Festival in Frankfurt am Main from September 28-30, 2008. You can find the exact rules of the competition, more detailed information and registration documents at www.ed-ward.de.

6th Annual International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge

Posted In | Event Category: Animation, Other, Visualization | Event Type: Contests
Starts: Sep 26, 2008 - Ends: Sep 26, 2008
Submission Deadline: May 31, 2008
Location: World Wide Web
Website: http://www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/scivis
The sixth annual Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge is now underway. Co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the journal SCIENCE, the flagship publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Visualization Challenge is a prestigious competition to find the photographs, illustrations, and digital media that best communicate science, engineering, and technology for education and journalistic purposes. Last year's winning entries were as diverse and imaginative as any yet received. They took us in close to see how nicotine creates cravings, how muscles work, how wires can heal themselves, and even what lies behind our noses. They helped us learn physics, mathematics, and the progression of breast cancer. They took us up 18 kilometers to the top of Hurricane Bonnie and down to the delicate structures of sea moss from Cape Breton Island. They even slowed time to a standstill, revealing the beautiful complexity of a bat's flight. Winning entries will be published in a special section of the Sept. 26, 2008 issue of SCIENCE and Science Online and on NSF's website. The entry deadline is May 31, 2008. For rules, entry forms, and more information, see www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/scivis.
