THE TRAGEDY OF MAN (North American Premiere)

HUNGARIAN ANIMATION FILM

“Man, I have spoken: struggle and have faith.”

Written and directed by Marcell Jankovics, based on the play by Imre Madách

Cannes Palme D’Or winner and Oscar-nominated Hungarian legend of animation, Marcell started the process of adapting his film in 1988 and after two decades has finally finished.  The film follows the structure of the play and consists of 15 acts that guide us through the past and the future of mankind.  It opens with the creation of the world and we are introduced to Adam and Eve and follow them through space and time in search of the meaning of life with the guidance of Lucifer.  We watch them travel from the Garden of Eden and other historic periods until we arrive in 19th century London and from there the film explodes past 150 years and we get a glimpse of the future.  The film is a dramatic version of the play while it keeps the philosophical profoundness of Madach’s book.  The film is visually unique with its wit and makes Lucifer’s fight for the souls of Adam and Eve more compelling than ever.

The Hungarian Film Festival of Los Angeles has become one of the leaders in presenting contemporary Hungarian cinema not only to the Hungarian community but to all foreign film lovers everywhere. Movies inspire us and teach us to look at the world differently and with our movies and documentary selection this year we feel we have accomplished just that. This year we are proud to present an array of different films that focus on human rights

Too Art for TV 6 Gallery Show

Too Art for TV 6
Sixth Annual Group Exhibition for the Animation Industry

Grand Opening of Bunnycutlet Gallery
Opening reception – Friday, November 9th, 6-10pm
Show runs November 9th, 2012 through December 14th, 2012

Bunnycutlet Gallery is pleased to debut its new space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with the 44-person group exhibit Too Art for TV 6, New York’s sixth annual exhibition for artists in the animation industry.

Too Art for TV started in 2006 for artists who, by virtue of working collaboratively (and semi-anonymously) in the work-for-hire profession of broadcast animation, needed a public showcase for their individual artistic endeavors – no matter how un-TV they were. Curated by animation painter Liz Artinian, Too Art combined well-known animation artists with up-and-coming ones, their conceptual cohesion being an embrace of the experimental and the whimsical, with comics, animation, and illustration working as an aesthetic thread.

Orphaned in 2008 when its original host gallery left New York, Too Art continued its annual life thanks to yearly pop-up galleries, funded and organized by Liz Artinian, and built with the help of exhibitors and countless volunteers. Distinctive from previous years, Too Art for TV 6 also debuts the new Bunnycutlet Gallery, an art space founded by Liz as a permanent home for Too Art, as well as for a broader art culture that embraces figurative art, pop art, and "geek" art.

Featuring new works by 44 artists, including first time Too Artexhibitor Vincent Scala, whose large acrylic paintings combine animation, horror, and comedy with vibrant colors. Also featuring paintings by Too Art veterans Kelly Denato and Jessica Milazzo - though their work differs aesthetically, they share a unique ability to mix metaphor and humor with a beautiful illustrator’s hand. Isam Prado’s drawings, while delicately drawn, are portraits of internal distress and bitter violence, contrasted with Christy Karacas’s massive-scale drawings, which energetically explode with cats, robots, and comic violence.

PRIMANIMA logo

PRIMANIMA is a festival of workshop films, diploma films made by students and first films made by young professionals or non-professionals. All these categories will have a separate competition programme at PRIMANIMA. The Grand Prix of the festival is 2000 Euro, supported by the Council of Budaörs Town.

Why animated?
Why not? Why not have an animated (= fresh, exciting, innovative / related to animation film) festival in one of the most animated (= fresh, exciting, innovative / related to animation film) cities of Hungary, Budaörs?

OK, then why PRIMANIMA?
We believe that a scene is needed to get to know the prime animation film makers of the future so PRIMANIMA focus primarily on them. PRIMANIMA's competition programme, hence, is dedicated to student films, graduation films and first films.

An animated film festival?
PRIMANIMA cannot be not animated because of the
- fresh film screenings – watch the most recent pieces of young animators and animation students from all over the world!
- exciting presentations and workshops – get to know the animation film education, production and history of our neighboring countries!
- innovative forums – learn the most creative achievements of applied animation!

Why then? Why there?
28 October is the International Animation Day, which is celebrated since 2002 by ASIFA. Hungary joined the feast in 2005. Last year, in 2011 Budaörs was the main host of IAD in Hungary, located only 15 minutes from the centre of Budapest.

We are proud to present you PRIMANIMA World Festival of First Animations which will take place 25-28 October 2012 in Budaörs. We truly hope you can join us and get animated, fresh, excited at PRIMANIMA!
