ASIFA-SF'S Annual Open Screening for Independent Animators and Student Films

At the Exploratorium's McBean Theater, free, public invited, lots of free parking. Everybody with an animated film is invited to bring it and it will be shown (16mm, VHS tape & DVD). Just show up with it. Questions? Email karlcohen@earthlink.net The program will include: Don Albrecht, a former Disney animator, will have an outrageous surprise or two (Walt wouldn't approve of his new work), Jett Atwood's TEA FOR TWO, based on a pencil test made at Sheridan College. She finished this film on her own a year and a half later. Signe Baumane's BIRTH, is a powerful emotional work about one woman's experience. Charlie Canfield is bringing excerpts of his animation for the Emmy nominated A SPAN IN TIME. The award ceremony is May 9. Nick Fox-Gieg, THE ORANGE, Suddenly, a humble citrus fruit is granted absolute power over the universe. From a story by Benjamin Rosenbaum. Gene Hamm will delight us with CHINESE MEDICINE, PUNCTURE PERFECT (made for his comedy act) and his disturbing THE TRUTH ABOUT CUT FLOWERS? Andy Kaiser's FRIENDLY FIRE, a puppet film from Germany with music written and performed by Nik Phelps. A surprise by Michel Langan. Chris Perry's THE INCIDENT AT TOWER 37, a tale about limited natural resources by a teacher from Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass. It will be shown at SIGGRAPH 2009. Michael Stevenson, PIGEON PILFER. It's about a man who is tormented by stares from pigeons as he tries to figure out what they're after. San Francisco State's Animation program is presenting student music synch projects. Plus lots of other surprises from independent animators and college students. The show is always a lot of fun and well attended, so arrive early for a good seat.

Cascade SIGGRAPH Presents An Evening With Dr. Stuart Sumida

Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH, Oregon and Southwest Washington's local SIGGRAPH chapter, today announced that celebrated professor of anatomy and locomotion, Dr. Stuart Sumida will lecture on the utilization of animal and human biology within digital effects processes. Dr. Sumida's lecture, entitled, "From Stones and Bones to Balloons and Toons, Articulating the Anatomical Sciences with Animation and Digital Effects," will include examples from his past film projects to highlight the use of various artist tools, and show the importance of biological process and sizing details in digital effects creation.The event will take place at the Portland Community College (PCC), Cascade Campus on Tuesday, March 25 at 6 p.m. A biology professor at California State University San Bernardino, Dr. Sumida has been an anatomical consultant on more than 30 feature films for companies such as Walt Disney Feature Animation, DreamWorks, Warner Brothers, Rhythm & Hues, SONY Pictures Imageworks and Pixar. He began his career working on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and THE LION KING, and continued with MULAN, the live action versions of 101 and 102 DALMATIANS, TARZAN, HARRY POTTER, LILO AND STITCH, SHREK II, MADAGASCAR, CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, SURF'S UP, and RATATOUILLE, among others. Currently, Dr. Sumida is acting as the anatomical consultant on KUNG FU PANDA (DreamWorks) and BOLT (Walt Disney Feature Animation). Dr. Sumida received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1987, having previously taught in the Department of Anatomy and the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He is a comparative anatomist and paleontologist who specializes in the biomechanics and evolution of locomotion. He is the author of three books and numerous scientific papers, and his paleontological research has taken him throughout North America and Europe with the support of many museums, the National Geographic Society and NATO. The evening will begin with a networking and social hour beginning at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the PCC Cascade Moriarty Arts Building (www.pcc.edu/pcc/dmal/cascademap.htm).Light refreshments will be served. Dr. Sumida's lecture will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to RSVP to cascadesiggraph@gmail.com for planning purposes. Inspired Art Fair is the only U.K. annual art fair showcasing up to 70 independent undiscovered artists held at Old Truman Brewery, 91, Brick Lane, London E1,16th - 21st Nov. The launch in Oct. 2003 gave 49 international sculptors, drawers, painters, photographers and digital artists of exceptional quality the opportunity to show and sell their work to thousands of visitors and international galleries.

Animations are required to be projected at the Fair to contibute to the atmosphere. As the Fair is run on a voluntary basis, all animations will be shown without pay, but will get full credit in the corporate catalogue. Following a year-long advertising campaign including London Underground and Time Out magazine, thousands of people are expected to attend the Fair. This will include people from the Press and Trade Industry and representatives from the Art and Design world. This is an excellent opportunity to present animations to a desirable client base and to build important contacts for the future.

EAM Plus is a four-month advanced animation-training program. The initiative is aimed at interested people, who already have experience in animation.
