ANIMA

The festival is objective is to spread animation as an engine of growth of the audiovisual industry and culture, generating a space to share technologies, artistic propositions, experiences and trends, among the different countries.

ANIMA'09 will take place in the city of Cordoba, Argentina, from October 8 through 10, 2009. The festival is organized by the Centro Experimental de Animacion and the Secretaria de Extension Universitaria, National University of Cordoba. This fifth edition of the ANIMA will be dedicated to exploring the concept of Identity Traits. Therefore, we open the following: -- Call for entries, for short and feature animation films of every genre and topic. Special interest is granted to those films where the filmmaker's expressive intention stands out from marketing requirements; and also to school productions. CARTOON, European Animation Film Association has chosen EXPOTOONS, the most representative international animation festival in Latin America, as a strategic partner in that region to organize CARTOON CONNECTION, the first meeting between European and Latin American animation professionals. The most representative animation event in Latin America. It hosts selected films, conferencists, trainers, production and distribution companies, buyers and more! EXPOTOONS is an annual international animation festival taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, dedicated to companies, artists, producers, students and professionals. In its 4th edition, it continues to build a bridge between Latin America and the world. The festival presents three days of conferences with international animation icons, meetings with Latin American animation professionals, feature premieres, workshops, animation market, special programmes and exhibitions, and a competition for feature films, short films, advertising, TV series and graduation shorts from all over the world.

Animarte is a showcase that focuses on short animated films. The show tours cities in South America bringing some of the best animated shorts from around the world. The show is offered free of charge and we try reach large audiences. We believe in bringing animation shorts to the largest number of people possible to spark their creativity and open their minds to this innovative form of art.

Animarte’s Artistic Director, Javier Saldeña, was born and raised in Argentina. He studied filmmaking in Buenos Aires and later moved to the United States to further his studies in filmmaking and animation. During regular trips back home he would bring animated shorts with him that he had seen in the United States to share with friends and family. Javier soon discovered how excited people in his home country of Argentina and the surrounding countries were about this unique form of art.

That’s when we decided to partner up with friends, fellow animation lovers and other artists to mount an animation show that would bring the best animated shorts to cities throughout South America!

ANIMARTE showcases the best animation shorts from around the world and brings them to cities throughout South America. Already three major cities have been confirmed for our sixth edition: Buenos Aires, Argentina; Mendoza, Argentina and Viña del Mar, Chile. We continue to work hard to add more cities to our tour!

Its main objective is to gather creative individuals devoted to the art and craft of animation into a meeting point where all discussion and exchange can be directed into the scope of animation, in its many dimensions of analysis: as artistic expression, as cultural industry, as educational resource, as corpus for research, etc… Or just as fun!

The Festival is open to animation films of every genre, topic, format and screening media (film, video, television, Internet). Special interest is granted to those works where the filmmaker’s expressive intention stands out from marketing requirements; and also to school productions. Participation is open for artists all over the world, with special interest in those from Latin America. There is no limit in the number of works an author can send, but a separate Entry Form must be completed for each work, and shipping instructions must be respected.

There is no entry fee.

ANIMA - Córdoba International Animation Festival is both an academic and cultural event, devoted specifically to animation in its artistic and technological dimensions. ANIMA merges the energy, enthusiasm and joy of an Animation Festival with the scientific aspects of a Conference. Held every odd year since 2001, ANIMA is the main animation event in Argentina and a very influential player in its field in Latin America and the Caribbean.

 

ANIMA is no ordinary event. Its main objective is to gather creative individuals devoted to the art and craft of animation into a meeting point where all discussion and exchange can be directed into the scope of animation, in its many dimensions of analysis: as artistic expression, as cultural industry, as educational resource, as corpus for research, etc… Or just as fun!

 

ANIMA is composed by three superimposed dimensions:

 

It’s an ANIMATION FESTIVAL: ANIMA’s 2009 edition screened 130 films (feature and shorts) selected from a pool of 825 submissions from 53 countries. Guests and Jurors in former editions include prestigious animators from abroad, to name a few: Academy Award nominee Barry Purves (UK), Academy Award nominee Christopher Hinton (Canada), Academy Award nominee Caroline Leaf (USA). Most of the finest Argentinian animators have also been guests and Jurors in the Festival: Juan Pablo Zaramella, Javier Mrad, Pablo Rodríguez Jáuregui, among many others.

It’s an OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM THE BEST: ANIMA aims to bring in depth and high – end educational opportunities to its audience. Seminars, workshops and short courses are organized, centered on a variety of topics dedicated to specific animation aesthetics and technology, and are conducted by prestigious professionals in the area, such as the forementioned guests, Rodolfo Sáenz Valiente (Argentina), Walter Tournier (Uruguay), Giannalberto Bendazzi (Italy) and many more.

It’s a CONFERENCE: ANIMA’s Academic Forum is the only specific Conference on Animation held in Latin America. It holds an open call for papers, video presentations and posters on animation, that undergo double peer – reviewing by an Academic Committee for selection and publication.

ANIMA2011 will be held on October 6th through 8th, 2011. Deadline for submission of film entries is on May 27th, 2011. Deadline for submission of papers, posters and audiovisual presentations is on June 17th, 2011.

The Silicon Pulp Animation Gallery will present Atomic Sushi, a major exhibition of artworks from Japanese animated films and TV series. The exhibition will include pre-production illustrations, storyboards, original hand-painted cels and backgrounds. A comprehensive catalogue covering the history, themes and artists will also be published to coincide with the exhibition. Also, the Dendy Cinemas are holding a "Japanime Festival" from Wednesday, September 6 - Sunday, September 10 as part of the Sydney Olympic Arts Festival. Silicon Pulp will exhibit original artworks from a selection of the films screened at the festival.
