A Date with Destino: Salvador Dali's 100th Birthday Gala
The Graphic Arts Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, with the Consulate General of Spain, will present an evening of celebration of surrealist artist Salvador Dali.
On May 11, 2004, the anniversary of Dali's 100th birthday, LACMA will host a festive remembrance of Dali's life and work through the lens of the recently completed Disney animated short film, DESTINO. Begun more than 50 years ago, the Academy Award nominated DESTINO represents a true persistence of memory and vision, bringing together the surrealist painterly aesthetic of Dali's fine art with the popular animation pioneered by Walt Disney and brought to completion by his nephew, Roy Disney.
The evening gala includes a film screening and discussion of "Destino & Dali" with special guests Roy and Patty Disney, Christine Argillet and Selma Holo, moderated by LOS ANGELES TIMES animation historian Charles Solomon, beginning at 6:30 pm in LACMA's Leo S. Bing Theater. The evening will be highlighted by the musical performances of Rebekah del Rio and J'Anna Jacoby, as well as the live "Exquisite Corpse" creation of such artists as Kenny Scharf, Robert Williams and others. A surrealist birthday cake reception, complete with salsa dancing, will follow in LACMA's Times Mirror Plaza.
Tickets ($11) may be purchased at the museum ticket office or by calling 323-857-6558. For more information, including updates on guest speakers and live performances, please email gac@lacma.org.
