The first Academy Award of the year is handed out before the Oscar ceremony later in March during the Academy Awards for Scientific and Technical Achievements ceremony. The Academy's Board of Governors voted on the award recipients based upon recommendations from the Scientific and Technical Awards Committee, chaired by Richard Edlund. A statuette for merit plus plaques for scientific and engineering as well as certificates for technical achievement are handed out during the black-tie gala at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
