Director Yoshiyuki Tomino To Appear At BAAF

The Big Apple Anime Festival (BAAF) will host anime director Yoshiyuki Tomino, creator of the GUNDAM saga, as a guest of honor at BAAF 2002. Tomino will be appearing at BAAF 2002 and the Anime Expo NY, both held in Times Square, August 30 - September 2, 2002. Yoshiyuki Tomino's CHAR'S COUNTER ATTACK will be one of the featured films to be screened at the festival. There will also be a panel discussion on Tomino's works and he will make a special guest appearance at the Times Square Virgin Megastore where he will greet fans and sign autographs.

E3 Preview

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) will take place this year at the Los Angeles Convention Center from May 21-24, 2002. Highlighting the best in interactive entertainment, E3 plays host to over 62,000 retailers, distributors, developers and investors in the interactive entertainment business. New releases in the gaming world are the order of the day at E3, along with some great game demonstrations, two days of conferences and panels and even an appearance by Lara Croft.

Syd Mead In Person at E3

Artist Syd Mead, the concept designer of the original 1982 cult-classic TRON, will make a special guest appearance at E3 on Wednesday, May 22 from 2:30 to 4:30 pm to promote Disney Interactive's TRON 2.0 game, slated for release in spring 2003. Mead is working as an artistic consultant for the game. E3 attendees can meet Mead first-hand and receive a limited edition print of original TRON art designed and autographed by the artist. AMPAS Presents 4-Part Visual Effects Seminar Beginning April 30

A four-part seminar examining the art of visual effects will be presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences beginning April 30, 2002, at 7:00 pm. The series will continue for three additional Tuesday evenings - May 7, 14 and 21 - and will feature participants who have garnered 25 Academy Award nominations among them. Each session of "The State of the Visual Effects Arts" will focus on a specific area of the visual effects field and will be moderated by Jamie Price, who created the visual effects for THE TIME MACHINE and BICENTENNIAL MAN.

Don't Miss Bristol's Animated Encounters April 25- 28, 2002. The 3rd Animated Encounters Festival runs April 25-28, 2002 at the Watershed Media Center in Bristol, England. An Evening With Emily Hubley

On Wednesday, April 17, 2002, Women In Animation NY will host a special evening with award-winning filmmaker Emily Hubley at the Gene Stavis Theater at School of Visual Arts, 209 E. 23rd Street, Room 502. Hubley will talk about her experience working on the feature film HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, and will screen several of her short films, including PIGEON WITHIN, which premiered at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival and won the Best Animation Award at the USA Film Festival. Siggraph Examines Small Shops That Make an Impact

"Small Shop, Big Punch" is the theme of the February 12 meeting of the Los Angeles Chapter of SIGGRAPH. Featuring artists from several southern California-based boutique effects houses, the meeting aims to explore the rise of boutique CGI houses and how they manage to work alongside industry giants on blockbuster feature film and commercial effects projects. Disney’s Animated Classics On The Big Screen At LACMA

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) kicks off its celebration of 100 years of Disney on Friday, February 1, 2002 with a screening of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, the one that started it all. On Saturday, February 3, 2002 at 5 pm, noted animation historian John Canemaker will be at LACMA presenting "The Nine Old Men," highlights of the work created by the now-legendary group of artists that joined the Disney studio in the 1930s and remained there over many decades. Mr. Canemaker will also be available to sign copies of his new book WALT DISNEY'S NINE OLD MEN.

This Thursday! Pixar Honored By Los Angeles Museum Of Art

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) will celebrate the 15th anniversary of Pixar Animation Studios on Thursday, January 10 beginning at 7:30 pm. Pixar founder John Lasseter will participate in a retrospective of the studio's feature and short films, as well as a Q&A hosted by ABC-TV film critic Joel Siegel. Clips from the studio's four feature films and five animated short films will be presented. Also scheduled to attend the event are Pete Docter, director of MONSTERS, INC., Ed Catmull, president of Pixar Animation Studios, and other Pixar filmmakers.

Comic Book Art Show Commemorates September 11 Attacks

In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, comics creators shared their talents by lauding the firemen, policemen, medical technicians and everyday citizens that were the real-life heroes of September 11. Numerous anthologies of artwork commemorating September 11 have been created including Marvel Comics HEROES and A MOMENT OF SILENCE, Alternative Comics 9-11: EMERGENCY RELIEF trade paperback anthology, and Dark Horse and DC Comics SEPTEMBER 11 two-volume set. Now some of this artwork will be on display beginning January 22, 2002 in New York City.
