India's Kinfra to Set Up School

Kerala, India-based Kinfra Film & Video Park (KFVP) has gained approval from the commerce ministry to launch an international animation school, which will be built on a private-public-partnership (PPP) basis, reports THE BUSINESS STANDARD. The new school will be located on Kinfra's campus in Thiruvanathapuram.

Kinfra md A S Suresh Babu said, "We had earlier submitted a project report on the possibilities of the animation school to the Commerce Ministry and this got a final approval. Now we are in the process of finalizing a managing committee for the project."

Gnomon Workshop Releases Three New Training DVDs

The Gnomon Workshop has release three DVDs by acclaimed artists Taron, Zack Petroc and Keith Thompson, covering organic modeling, art direction and character design.

"Once again, we at the Gnomon Workshop have been privileged to work with some of the industries top talents," stated Alex Alvarez, director of Gnomon. Spring Term Open for Gnomon Online Registration

Registration for Gnomon Online will remain open until April 2 (the first day of the spring term). On April 2, registration will close for Gnomon's 10-week courses, but will remain open for the five-week courses, 3D Texture Painting and Advanced Sculpting and Texturing in ZBrush.

Gnomon Online is currently offering six classes:

Grey's Anatomy Star Donates 25K To Slave Trade Animation Project

Isaiah Washington, star of the TV series, GREY'S ANATOMY, has donated $25,000 to a CG animated project, which will chronicle the Atlantic slave trade, reports THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.

Last year, Washington formed a nonprofit foundation to help the people Sierra Leone, where the actor has traced his roots to .

"The stories of innumerable Sierra Leoneans that were forced into slavery have yet to be extensively told," Washington said. "I believe this project will begin to shed some much-needed light on the region, both past and present."

Carnegie Mellon's ETC Opens in Silicon Valley

ETC-Silicon Valley came into existence as 10 students and two ETC faculty members commenced ETC project work and classes at two distinct locations in Silicon Valley.

Electronic Arts, the world's largest gaming company and a long-time friend of the ETC, has provided the ETC with ample cubicle and meeting space on the third floor of one of the buildings at its Redwood City campus. The ETC students and faculty moved into their spacious surroundings, welcomed by many of the ETC alumni employed at Electronic Arts, and immediately commenced work on two ETC projects.

AI of LA Adds Sustainable Packaging to Graphic Design Classes

"Sustainable Packaging" will become a major theme taught in Graphic Design classes at The Art Institute of California -- Los Angeles during the Winter Quarter 2007 starting Jan. 8, 2007, in Santa Monica, California.

Instructor Suzannah Mathur, who has a master's degree in Sustainable Product Design, will teach a class specifically on sustainable packaging to help make designers more knowledgeable about the choices they have. Mathur explains, "Packaging accounts for most of waste. [The content of a package] will break before its package does."

Starting by storyboarding their animation, "Make It, Move It" students design and create a character, animal or object using mixed media and collage.
