Competition 5 - When Abstract Meets Reality We Call It Experimental

Whatever you call it, abstract/experimental ruled the day in Competition 5. Here are some highlights.

Ottawa Competition 3 and 4 - Endings are Hard to Do

I have no comment on Competition 3 and only a couple films stood out for me in Competition 4.

Hetalia: Axis Powers, Season 1

All right, I’ll keep this short. I love a good comedy. But despite its addictive theme song, Hetalia: Axis Powers is hardly noteworthy.

Ottawa Competition 2 - There Can Be Happy Endings

There were some tough films in this competition. Three stood out for me.

Ottawa Day 2: Jan Pinkava is Utterly Charming and It's Really Cold

Posted In | Blog Categories: Ottawa Animation Festival | Site Categories: Events, Films, People, Short Films
The highlight of my second day in Ottawa was finding a working ATM. But the “treat” of the day was sitting in on an intimate discussion with former Oscar-winning Pixar and current Laika writer/director Jan Pinkava. Friendly, engaging, entertaining and brilliant – utterly charming. Made me feel like audience extra at a taping of “Regis and Kelly.” And it’s really, really cold here.

Ottawa Competition 1 - Keeping It Real

Every year I think Chris Robinson can't take it any higher. But every year he ramps it up a notch. This guy is the master of the post-modern introduction. You had to be there to feel the bizarre energy, to share in the intense, quizzical, weird couple of moments. Then we were back to reality.

Ottawa Day 1: Please Move Out of My Way!

Is it just me, or do Canadians like to congregate and talk hockey while blocking the entrance to every elevator, hallway, doorway and turnstile in the vicinity? It seemed every single path I took yesterday was impeded by some throng completely oblivious to those trying to navigate past them. Oh, plus I saw some good films!

Ottawa - And then things got ugly

I met with Linda Simensky, the Vice-President for Children’s Programming at PBS. We had strawberries and tea as she graciously shared her 20-years experience on the international scene in public broadcasting, what produced locally stays local and what gets to go international. (More about that later). But things got ugly when I asked her to define “edutainment”. Here was her response:

Corpse Princess will undoubtedly feed the anime masses with their craving for hot girls and their kick-ass skills.

An Evening with Disney: A look at Tron Legacy and Tangled

Posted In | Blog Categories: Reviews | Site Categories: 3D, CG, Films, Visual Effects
On a rainy October Monday we media types, invited by the Disney folks, gathered at a midtown NYC arts center. The lure: a peek at the studio’s two big holiday events: Tron Legacy and Tangled, their CGI-animated de/reconstruction of the Rapunzel story. I’ll go out on a bit of a limb here and call Tangled Disney’s liveliest animated feature in a long time and their best fairy tale updating ever.

HEREAFTER (2010) (***1/2)

Posted In | Blog Categories: Drama | Site Categories: CG, Films, Visual Effects
For this film, 80-year-old Clint Eastwood looks at death. Based on a script from Peter Morgan (FROST/NIXON), the film weaves together three different experiences with death — a near death experience, the loss of a loved one and a metaphysical look at the issue. Each is told on a haunting emotional level. No matter what your own personal beliefs are about the afterlife, this film actually reinforces the most important part of life.

Blu-ray: THE EXORCIST (1973)

Posted In | Blog Categories: Blu-ray Screening Room | Site Categories: Films, Home Entertainment, Visual Effects
This Blu-ray release transfers both the original theatrical cut and the 2000 never before seen cut into 1080p for the first time. For a film from the 1970s, the look is impressive in HD. While wide shots contain noise, many close-ups and medium shots are pristine. Dirt and damage has been cleaned up almost completely. Details pop in things like fabrics. For the most part more details emerge in the brighter lit scenes. The picture problems are fleeting. Black levels are a bit inconsistent and some shots are soft.

Master of the Martial Hearts

Simply put, if you’re ready for a fetishistic and voyeuristic good time, then grab a copy of Master of The Martial Heats. It’s like a great beer commercial for cable TV. Nothing but hot babes bouncing around with each other.

The 7th China International Computer Animation and Digital Arts Festival

Posted In | Blog Categories: Animation Festivals | Site Categories: Awards
Most of the juries I have served on have been in the States or Western Europe. Needless to say, there is a fairly regular overlap in content submitted to these geographic locations. I often found myself wondering how to get more Asian countries to submit their films to SIGGRAPH North America, (as it’s being called now that we have SIGGRAPH Asia and our 2011 Conference is being held in Vancouver, Canada.) So when I was at ANIMA this past winter and a very nice festival organizer from China asked if I would be able to sit on the jury of the 7th China International Computer Animation and Digital Art Festival (CICADAF 2010), how could I say no?

LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA'HOOLE (2010) (***)

Posted In | Blog Categories: Fantasy, Animation, Action-Adventure | Site Categories: 3D, CG, Films
Zack Snyder puts his unique stamp on this animated adventure. Based on Kathryn Lasky's young adult book series, the film is like LORD OF THE RINGS performed by owls via photoreal animation. The straightforward narrative is made more compelling simply through the visual originality.

Movie Review: Legend of the Guardians: 300 with Feathers

Posted In | Blog Categories: Reviews | Site Categories: CG, Films
You’ve probably heard about the Uncanny Valley: not a geographical location, but the precipitous drop in peoples’ comfort level when they come across something that’s almost human… but not quite (like the replicants in Zemeckis’ mocap movies). Well, in Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians you’ve got owls – dozens and hundreds of owls who look almost like real life owls… but not quite. It’s that quest for the absolutely perfect replication of wind rippling the tiniest hairs in their feathers or the way light glints and reflects off their wide eyes: Guardians achieves it – at the expense of the audience they’ve just tossed into the Valley.
