Netscape to carry two animated series by Mondo

San Francisco, California-based Mondo Media, Inc. has announced a one-year deal with Netscape Communications, a subsidiary of America Online, Inc., to provide Netscape's Netcenter Web site with two weekly animated shows which will be presented under the banner of MONDO MINI SHOWS. LIKE, NEWS is written and directed by Don Asmussen, a regular cartoonist for TIME and GEORGE magazines, and features a sarcastic teenager with a nose ring who "interviews" newsmakers such as Saddam Hussein and Al Gore.

PINOCCHIO returns to VHS

Buena Vista Home Entertainment previously announced that the 60th
Anniversary Edition of Disney's classic PINOCCHIO would be the first Disney
animated feature to be released in the DVD format [Animation Flash
8/24/99]. Now they have announced that a new VHS edition of PINOCCHIO,
fully restored and THX-certified, will be available on the same day as the
DVD version, October 26, 1999 in the US. This version will include a

Cartoon Network supports college club

Gary Albright, vice president of creative services and off air promotions
for Atlanta, Georgia-based Cartoon Network, has awarded The Classical
Animation Society of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) a $500
grant on behalf of Cartoon Network. The society will use the money to help
fund its activitites such as last February's MULAN Event which included a
screening of Disney's MULAN, clips of various stages of animated scenes,
and a workshop in layout design by Disney artist Bill Hodman. The Classical

This issue #38 of ANiMATO! is autographed with paint (not ink) by Underdog creator Joe Harris. Thirteen pages are devoted to Underdog in this issue which kicks off with David Krell's "Underdog: The Canine Crusader" and closes with "Flying High With Underdog" by Leigh Anne Brodsky. In addition to drawing the original cover, Joe Harris also wrote an article for this issue entitled "Life With Underdog." Inside the front cover is Joe's full color artwork of Underdog smashing "Hunger" for the World Hungerthon and, on page 37, Joe's storyboard art for The World of Commander McBragg.

Animation World Network is looking for an intern to assist the editorial staff with our monthly on-line publication Animation World Magazine and weekly Flash Email Newsletter. Responsibilities will include proofreading, copy editing, news gathering, transcribing interviews, filing, researching publicity information, writers and companies, conducting surveys, working with freelance writers and managing correspondence for the editor and associate editor. Part of the position’s responsibilities involves doing publicity for the publication.

Atomic Vision Animation and Tub Studio have premiered their first episode of the innovative and stylish on-line animated comic book at www.jonninitro.com. The animated series follows the adventures of Jonni Nitro, an English superspy and heroine living in the near future. The animation is viewable using an Internet browser (i.e. Navigator, Explorer) and Macromedia's Flash 3.0 plug-in. "We've worked hard to create a new style of on-line animation," says Alex Ogle, Atomic Vision founder. "There has never been animation this realistic on the Internet before."

As a follow-up to our 11/17/98 Animation Flash story, Canadian-based CINAR Films Inc. has changed their name to CINAR Corporation (Corporation CINAR in French) after a Special Meeting of Shareholders approved the change. The new name better reflects the diversification of the company’s business activities which have expanded beyond the film industry.

HotWired Launches New Animation Express Site

HotWired's Animation Express (http://www.hotwired.com/animation/) is a new site that showcases the latest animation from both professional and independent animators. The animation can be viewed using plug-in technologies like Quicktime 3, Shockwave's Flash 3 and Director 6 and a "plug-in tester" will help you download the right plug-ins if you don't already have them. Currently, the site features selections from Pixar's Oscar-winning short "Geri's Game" and highlights from Spike and Mike's 1998 Festival of Animation.

Toon union final election results

The animation union, the Motion Picture Screen Cartoonists (M.P.S.C.) and Affiliated Optical Electronic and Graphic Arts, Local 839 IATSE has completed its voting process and announced the new Executive Board of the organization. Re-elected to office were incumbents Bronwen Barry, Dave Brain, Pat Connolly-Sito, Earl Kress, Craig Littell-Herrick, Enrique May, Ann Sullivan and Stephan Zupkas. Also elected were newcomers Bob Foster, Warren Greenwood and Karen Nugent, replacing Board members Sheila Brown, Tom Ray and Dave Zaboski who did not run for reelection.
