Ergo Proxy: Complete Box Set

Posted In | Blog Categories: Reviews | Site Categories: Anime, Cartoons, Films, Home Entertainment
Okay, all that verbiage should indicate one thing: this series is smart, or at least tries to be. Overall, I like it. I like it a lot. The darkness of Ergo Proxy’s canvass, the moodiness of its city, and the detached citizens invokes Blade Runner-esque trappings that are a true anime/sci-fi delight.

Mushi-Shi: The Movie

At any rate, I enjoyed this film. I wasn’t jumping on the couch like Tom Cruise. But the supernatural essence inherent in nature’s beauty is successfully laid bare in this live-action version of Mushi-Shi. Otaku everywhere should be pleased with the adaptation.

Big Windup!: Part 1

Posted In | Blog Categories: Reviews | Site Categories: Anime, Home Entertainment
Big Windup gets points for just being itself. So much anime being licensed in the US seems defined by supernatural high school students charged with killing ghosts or man-eating beasts. So, it’s always nice to see the other side of anime that is so prevalent in Japan, that is, its reflection of the contemporary world.

If you’re not already a diehard fan, xxxHolic will grow on you like a melodious, teenage-angst filled song canvassing an episode of Dawson’s Creek or One Tree Hill. You’ll be covertly humming the chorus for days to come.

Kaze No Stigma: Volume 1

There’s a lot of action, and Kazuma’s use of the wind to create force fields, electricity, and breezes shaper than a katana is visually impressive. But this series is running on too many stock anime characters.

Unfortunately there is nothing of great importance to report here. As much as I love Steve Yun and Tommy Yune, who are largely responsible for reinvigorating Robotech and its legacy through the Shadow Chronicles, the panel at Comic-Con 09 was reminiscent of last year’s.
