I'd like to know how about musical animation such as "the nightmare before christmas" . did they make the music and sings and then plan the animation based on it or other way ?
The coffee table book of "NIghtmare Before Chrismas" is still out there. I think the script came first then music with a blending of both. I do not have the book so this is a guess on my part.
I have run events for musicians in Kent called 'Animation Live' where the musicians improvise live to the animations as they happen, and it worked really well. Has to be the right kind of animation though!
Here's an animation by the bass player in my band, Nicholas, I think it's quite unusual as the video is illustrated and animated by Nicholas who also wrote the song. I think he used Synfig and GIMP to do this. hope you enjoy.

I would prefer Music First then Animation. So don't need to sync the animation again and again. Although a rough animation can be done without music. But final one can only be done once you have music in your hand and you can sync the animation with that to make the final output.
Music first, because otherwise, how else are you going to time the animation to hit any beats in the music?
