He just can't let it go...

Our good buddy over at AN managed to take another swipe at these boards in the last few days. Rather than just correcting a minor error by miracle_sets and moving on, he makes the time to slam this board and act indignant.

Scroll down to the his fifth post, the one after miracle_sets responds to many of the unsubstantiated character attacks that some of the caring, accepting, non-judgmental members of AN deliver. Because remember - everyone over at AN is treated with respect...

Not only does he take a slam at AWN, he treats a PAYING member of his own forums somewhat brusquely, what with their own creation and company.

I guess over there, respect only comes if you don't ruffle Charles' fragile sensibilities. Whatever warts the guy has..........whatever criticisms are directed his way.......how in the hell can he expect a small studio or independant animator to contribute to his forums and enterprise when he says stuff like this:

Also, your studio doesn't have much of a chance if you produce animation like the Miracle Mouse pilot without getting out of the way and letting your creative staff do their thing. You won't make it with Miracle Mouse the way you're doing it now. I say this from the input you've received on this thread from people who know what they're talking about and whose opinions I respect and value.

Yea, I know it'd mush his buns to quote him directly like that, but what on Earth is this guy thinking? THIS is NOT contributing to the field of animation, by slamming a guy whose taken the steps ( AND RISK!) to start up, fund and run a company that is ATTEMPTING to make product to better the industry. Who in their right mind would want to contribute their time, effort and product to his forums when he can treat them like that on a moments notice.
Miracle Studios, for whatever criticisms or comments they seem to have gotten on AN and here, at least come across as sincere in what they are trying to do.

I guess when Charles says that "we are here for artists" he means that once an artist becomes a studio owner, they get kicked out of the club. Charming thought that is.

Absolutely. The thing that caught my eye however was that people went beyond critiquing the animation to a full-on assault on Tom's character, business practices, etc, without any credible firsthand knowledge, not to mention insulting his personal beliefs. And they take him to task over ridiculous stuff like "relocation pay" for people who have left the studio. Personally, I've never heard of anyone being paid relocation to move away from a former employer...

Just a tiny sample of the kind of thoughtful, supportive commentary on view at AN...

One thing's for sure..."vicious" is deceptive in how it looks like it's spelled wrong but in fact isn't.

Guys, please. If the man likes his sour grapes all that much just leave him to it. If you want him to know what you think about him please tell him at his board and don't invite anymore pointless quarrels and debates here. We're better than that.

You're probably right, Jabber. I was just so astonished that a simple error could cause such vitriol that I had to share.

I do read both boards. No reason not to, as there are some interesting discussions going on in both places. Unfortunately, I can't follow your suggestion about expressing my opinion on AN, as I'm not willing to part with $15 a year for the privilege, and my "unsubscribed" account never works for more than a few days.

Charles suffers from "short man" syndrom. He should be pitied.

Pat Hacker, Visit Scooter's World.

Actually, in the man's defense, on the first page of that thread he DOES ask for caution and fairnesss towards Hignite.
Its on the second page that he does a complete reversal and slams him--supposedly because someone's whipsered something to him.

I think some of the critiques go way beyond being fair though, almost to the point of being mean-spirited. If the product is flawed, then fine--no-one suggested alternatives, they just condemned the work.

That makes me uncomfortable in a lot of ways. Its like a veil of pettiness seems to drop over some folks once one of their own takes on the challenge of starting a company and become one of the "monkeys" we all love to rail about. As if the risk of such an enterprise is beneath animators and no-one should attempt such things.

Of course I know that's not the actual attitude, but golly........its looking more and more like it is.

For an animator, after aspiring to be a director, the only major plateau left really is studio owner. A few of my peers have taken on such ambitions, and succeeded. They've earned and, more importantly, deserve their success. Some have become very affluent in the process and my hat goes off to them.

Now, there's those voices that would question the routes some of the folks took to get where they are--the people that have gone through their studios are bound to to have some grumblers in their numbers.
Well, the reality is, that THAT is business..........part of the process.
Owning a studio is a pain in the ass--I've done it and do not want to do it again--its just not for me. There's a whole other side to a studio owner's day that a lot of employees never see or appreciate.

So Miracle Studios first publicly-seen product stumbles a bit( okay, maybe badly, according to some).......I just don't get where the need comes to to bite the head off their number-one rep.

Ken, is the end for that "onward cartoon soldiers" chatroom that far off? ...with the site now totally dominated by little Charlotte's outrageous obsession (mania) for youtube, and baby greg's latest claims of being a UFO expert/genetic researcher/Native American/Soprano toughguy/Consumer advocate, I'd say the writing's on the wall....

On the wall, and their cans of Tremclad are nearing empty......me thinks.

has this guy (Charles) done anything substantial as an animator?

Charles is a character designer, not an animator (that I know of, anyway...). Two of his claims to fame are early designs for the video game characters Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot (if memory serves). He also runs a very successful animation training program in the L.A. area.

Putting yourself on the line

Hello.

I agree with a previous post, Tom Hignite has put himself on the line and he does it with more than words. He has risked HIS money doing 2D animation when others ran into their holes. No matter what the quality of the product he does deserve respect.

Other than that...I really don't care about the forum at that other place. We will conduct ourselves with dignity...toon dignity.

Thanks folks!!!
