Dreamworks' worst nightmare

Found this in an article about potential boycotts of "The DaVinci Code":

"Believers are to purposely attend Disney's "Over the Hedge" to bump "Da Vinci" from first place in opening weekend box office."

I'll bet Kevan didn't know he's been working for Disney all this time... :D

It WOULD be cool if "Hedge" beats "DaVinci" though...

J2 Cool, Over the Hedge is tons better than Sharks Tale. I enjoyed the animation on Madagascar, even though the story was lacking. I'm sure Over the Hedge is better than both of those films.

"Animation isn't about how well you draw, but how much to believe." -Glen Keane

I was going to see both of those now, but if one has to be cut =) Besides, I've received enough Tom Hanks exposure over the last 700 movies (That's 10 in Hanks Years) :D

i would not want to be opening on the same weekend as Da Vinci code. just not a good idea. the movie might not do as well but it will have a blockbuster weekend. without a doubt.

I'd definitely see Over the Hedge before even renting the Da Vinci code. I played a DVC game online and it was too easy, so I'm sure the movie will be a disappintment too (just kidding, but I am sick of the hype).

I'd like to see both, but guess I'll wait till they come to satelite tv. Radical Christians are feeling their basis of faith questioned with the DaVinci code. I read Holy Blood Holy Grail back in the 80s and found the premise facsinating(It was a difficult read though, with lots of footnotes etc.). Haven't had a chance to read the Da Vinci Code book, the friend I borrow my books from is a deep seated baptist, so no way I am going to get the book there.

You know just to show the radical right they aren't the only people on the planet, I may sacrifice my weekend beer money and go see Da Vinci Code. Would probably be fun anyway, and more thought provoking than Over the Hedge.

I still think it's nonsense that so many people care about attacking the book if it's a work of fiction. I realize words and books are powerful, and many minds being captured and influenced by movies is a possibility, but I don't see a legitimate threat. To me it's like trying to disprove the little engine could. It's a story. I'm the last person in the world apparently to not understand why they're jumping on that guy.

Yeah, that may be true if it is totally a work of fiction. Holy Blood Holy Grail was a non fiction work, very detailed and annotated.

But if their faith is strong why should it matter? Or perhaps this is just the western equivalent of what happenned with the cartoons of Mohammad?

I'm the last person in the world apparently to not understand why they're jumping on that guy.

It's because they believe what ever is written in books. :D Oh come on, I'm joking.

I think that should the BOOK not books.

I found the new information that has recently come out on the gospel of Judas fascinating, but I haven't found anyone around here to discuss it with.

This is definitely a new era, you have to be careful who and what you talk about these days...it's a sorry time in U.S. and world history.

Pat Hacker, Visit Scooter's World.

I wouldn't really judge it so much as observe it...I enjoyed the shows and the discussion of the new gospel, but I'm one of those "freaks" who tries to keep an open mind.......to me it's not black/white, and it's not "everything has to be mutually exclusive, so pick a side and hope it's the right one"....Life is full of positives sitting right next to negatives...

That's how I am Scattered. I don't want to challenge anyones beliefs or faith, but I am always open to new historical finds and interpretations. And I love puzzles.

What's the word on Over The Hedge? Is it a better effort than Shark's Tale or Madagascar?

I wish I could remember the title of a book I saw on "The Daily Show" with John Stewart. A guy put togeather a collection of bible entrys that he was show to be false. I remeber one example about the stoning of the woman, which his reasearch showed had never happen.

So the Da Vinci Code is a work of fiction, big deal, it does not shake my faith.

Hold on a minute - Da Vinci is getting pretty poor reviews, compared to pretty good ones for Hedge. We may end up seeing some surprising numbers come Monday, and I personally can't wait to see what second week takes are like when word of mouth begins to circulate...

I just watched CNN where they said Over the Hedge was made by the creators of Madagascar AND Ice Age? Is that true? Was Blue Sky somehow involved or did CNN flub it?

Nope, Blue Sky didn't work on Hedge, and neither did Disney! Not unless there are nefarious plots afoot... I genuinely believe that the public is going to love the film as much as I do, so we'll leave it at that until all you guys see it.

...

Even though it has Audrey in it, I am going to hold off seeing The Da Vinci Code, I think. The book was a good page turner but the writing was terrible, and I imagine that the film will be a pale copy of that!

Plus, I can't condone Tom Hanks's mullet. It has no place in modern film-making, and that is why this film will be so controversial.

Man, you guys can't catch a break! First they give Disney credit, and now Blue Sky. :D

No wonder it's being billed as "Dreamworks' Over The Hedge"...

No doubt that mullet is the worst thing I've ever seen Tom Hanks in - he looked better in Phillidelphia right before he died.

Da Vinci did $224 million its opening weekend, #2 largest of all time.

With those reviews?!?

I think people who boycotted the film were responsible for such a successful opening weekend. Controversy over a film just means more people are going to see it to make their own opinion which means high profits for Dreamworks.

Box office mojo has it at just over $77 mil. Where did the $224 figure come from?

Since this is really a thread about Over The Hedge, congrats for coming in 2nd at $38 mil. Nice opening...

$224 is the world wide box office DSB.

Congrats Kevan for a good opening weekend. I'll probably see it this week.

Hi All,

Thanks for the kind comments. I was hoping that our opening would be around $50 million, but I guess you can't complain when you're going up against the might of Hanks's mullet and the guy from "Happy Days".

Go and see Hedge, slackers!

: )

Hedge is on our "to do" list for this coming weekend. Tonight, I'm going to see Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh in "Lust For Life." I love having an "art theater" in town... :0)

That's a great film, I am sure you will enjoy it.

I saw "Hedge" yesterday and was pleasantly surprized. It was a fun enjoyable film, although Wanda Sykes still bugs me. The animation was really well done. Great job Kevan and the rest of the gang. Shatner was awesome!! How can you not love a possum that over acts?! Hopefully the box office will pick up some more. I missed your name in the credits though Kevan.

I'm thinking about seeing it myself this week, with no school. I'm fighting the lazyness that summer brings, so getting out early in the day would be a good thing. :)

Ah - well that clears that up. Thanks!

Da Vinci returns for the weekend:

'The Da Vinci Code' finds box office treasure

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Despite lukewarm reviews and controversial content, the Tom Hanks religious thriller "The Da Vinci Code" reaped treasure at the box office this weekend, selling $232 million worth of tickets worldwide, including $77 million domestically.

I saw Da Vinci Code, it was rather good, the book is always better though. I haven't seen over the hedge, but my family enjoyed it.

As for hype and such, the problem is too many people believe striaght out that its tryint to come across as straight facts, when the real deal is its a story using some facts, but non the less fiction. Its to get you to open your mind to possiblities and all the options there could be.....its all a matter of opinion in the end of what to accept and what not to.

As for faith, I believe strongly in Christianity, and in science and history....the problem some people don't see is that everything has a link to each other....and when humans gain enough time and intelligence (remember time too) to figure it out, then we'd have no more suspisions and questions....geez how boring.

Anyone remember the book "the Word" by Irving Wallace? They even made a mini series out of it in the seventies. No one got this wound up, which would make one wonder what the church is afraid of? Perhaps there is some historical evidence behind it. The guys that wrote Holy Blood Holy Grail certainly annotated and documented their book. I didn't always agree with their conclusions, but they did give one something to think about.
