RUI ZINK
(Portugal)

The President of this Jury. Writer and professor at the University. Admired by the young people, since his youth his attitude and behaviour are based on an artistic intervention, always provocative. Presently he teaches Portuguese Literature at the Universidade Nova, Lisbon. He is now preparing the first PhD Thesis on Comics to be presented in Portugal. Author of several texts closely linked to cultural events, namely in co-operation with the poet Alberto Pimenta. Quite popular in Portugal, this recognition has been achieved also due to his collaboration with various newspapers and TV programmes. His most recent work, "Literatura Gráfica? — Banda Desenhada Portuguesa Contemporânea" is a book that reflects the importance of Script in Comics, questioning somehow the way they are seen by people.

Preside este Júri. Escritor e professor universitário. Pessoa de culto para as camadas mais jovens desde cedo que a sua atitude se baseia numa intervenção artística que tem assumido vários aspectos, mas que é sempre provocatória. Actualmente lecciona a cadeira de Literatura Portuguesa na Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Em preparação tem a primeira tese de doutoramento sobre Banda Desenhada a ser apresentada em Portugal. É autor de vários textos para café-concerto, animações de rua e é um colaborador histórico de acontecimentos com o poeta Alberto Pimenta. Tem grande popularidade a nível nacional, angariada, nomeadamente através da colaboração em vários jornais e programas de televisão de grande audiência. É autor de várias obras de ficção e ligadas à banda desenhada. O seu mais recente livro "Literatura Gráfica?" — Banda Desenhada Portuguesa Contemporânea é uma obra que reflecte na importância do argumento na Banda Desenhada, contestando, neste âmbito a maneira frequente como a BD é encarada.

JEAN-FRANÇOIS LAGUIONIE
(France)

An internationally renowned director, born on the 4th October 1939. He did his studies of Design and Theatre at the Université du Théatre des Nations, Paris. Founder and director of one of the most important animation studios, "La Fabrique". Beginning in 1965 we would like to point out the films "La Demoiselle et le Violoncelliste" (Grand Prix at the Annecy Festival — 1965);"L’Arche de Noe" (Silver Dragon at the Krakow Festival — 1967); "Une Bombe par Hasard" (Golden Dragon at the Krakow Festival, Grand Prix at the Mamaia Festival and several awards in Germany, Australia and Spain — 1969); "La Traversée de l’Atlantique à la Rame" ("Palme D’Or" for Short Films at the Cannes Festival, Grand Prix at the Ottawa Festival, Cesar 1978 — 1978); "Gwen ou le Livre des Sables" (Prize of the Critics at the Annecy Festival and Prize for Feature Film at the Los Angeles Festival). In 1998 he directed the feature film "Le Chateau des Singes". In preparation there’s the work "Les Enfants de la Fortune".

Realizador de renome internacional, nascido a 4 de Outubro de 1939. Na Universidade do Teatro das Nações, em Paris fez os seus estudos de Desenho e Teatro. Foi o fundador e o director de um dos mais importantes estúdios de cinema de animação "La Fabrique". Da sua longa biografia, iniciada no ano de 1965 salientamos os filmes "La Demoiselle et le Violoncelliste" (Grande prémio do Festival de Annecy — 1965); "L’Arche de Noe"( Dragão de Prata no Festival de Cracóvia — 1967): "Une Bombe Par hasard" (Dragão de Ouro no Festival de Cracóvia; Grande Prémio no Festival de Mamaia e prémios em Alemanha; Austrália e Espanha — 1969); "La Traversée de L’Atlantique à La Rame" (Palma de Ouro para as curtas-metragens no Festival de Cannes, Grande Prémio no Festival de Ottawa, Cesar 1978 — 1978); "Gwen ou Le Livre des Sables" (Prémio da Critica no Festival de Annecy e Prémio Longa-Metragem no Festival de Los Angeles). Em 1998 realiza a longa-metragem "Les Chateau des Singes". Em preparação tem a obra "Les enfants de La Fortune".

NICO CRAMA
(Holland)

Worked as a producer, director and scriptwriter in over 80 films. In the Netherlands he has mainly produced short films for the Government and worked for the Netherlands Broadcasting Corporation NOS. In Canada, he directed and produced films for the National Film Board, having been also the associate producer of A Canadian feature film. In the United States he worked as co-producer and directed a documentary film financed by Pepsi Co.. Many of his films have received prizes at international festivals. He began producing films in the late 60’s. In 1979, one of the films he had produced, "Oh, my Darling" directed by Borge Ring, was nominated for the Oscar. The same happened this year with the films directed by Paul Driessen, "3 Misses". In 1982 he was appointed managing director of the Holland Animation Foundation, a position he holds to the date. His work is not limited to the production and distribution of animation films but also includes the organisation of some events and exhibitions. Various honours were bestowed upon Nico Crama and those are the recognition of his work for the animation cinema.

Trabalhou como produtor, director e augumentista em mais de 80 filmes. Nos Países Baixos produziu essencialmente curtas-metragens para o Governo e trabalhou na Netherlands Broadcasting Corporation NOS. No Canadá realizou e produziu filmes para o National Film Board, tendo sido também produtor associado de uma longa-metragem canadiana. Nos Estados Unidos da América trabalhou como co-produtor e realizou um filme documentário financiado pela PEPSIco. Muitos dos seus filmes foram premiados em Festivais Internacionais. Começou na produção de filmes nos finais dos anos sessenta. Em 1979 viu uma das suas produções "Oh, My Darling", realizado por Borge Ring ser nomeado para o Oscar de Hollywood. O mesmo aconteceu este ano com o filme realizado por Paul Driessen "3 Misses". É desde 1982, até à presente data director da Fundação de Animação Holandesa. O seu trabalho não se limita à produção e distribuição de filmes de animação, mas também à organização de vários eventos e exposições. Para além dos inúmeros prémios atribuídos aos seus filmes, Nico Crama foi ainda distinguido com vários galardões, que premeiam o seu trabalho em prol do cinema de animação.

BRUNO EDERA (Switzerland)

His fascination for animation began in the late 50’s. In 1967 he starts working in the Television Suisse Romande, organising animation programmes dedicated to young people and adults. Recently, he co-produced, together with ARTE, a programme for a special soirée in which the theme was "Anima-Nippon", about Manga and the animation in Japan, with the duration of three and a half hours. He is also the responsible for the Television Suisse Romande co-productions of animation films directed by independent filmmakers. He wrote several articles, a book and dedicated himself to the specific study of "The History of the Swiss Animation Cinema", "The Animation Film in the Feminine", "The Animation Film in the Antipodes", among others. Some months ago, buy the time of CINANIMA ’99, he was appointed responsible for the ASIFA Archives that will now being moved to another place, near the Swiss Cinemateque.

O seu fascínio pelo cinema de animação começa no fim dos anos cinquenta. Em 1967 entra na Televisão Suíça Romana onde organiza emissões dedicadas ao cinema de animação e que são dirigidas essencialmente ao público adolescente e adulto. Recentemente organizou uma co-produção com a cadeia ARTE para uma "soirée" temática "Anima-Nippon" sobre o Manga e a animação no Japão, com a duração de três horas e meia. É, também, responsável pelas co-produções da Televisão Suíça Romana de filmes de cinema de animação de realizadores independentes. Escreveu vários artigos, um livro e desenvolveu estudos específicoos sobre "História do Cinema de Animação Suíço"; "O Filme de Animação no Feminino"; "O Filme de Animação nos Antípodas, entre outros. Por altura do CINANIMA 99 foi nomeado responsável pelos Arquivos da ASIFA que estão em vias de encontrar um novo local de armazenamento, perto da Cinemateca suíca.

MARCOS MAGALHÃES (Brazil)

Born in Rio de Janeiro. Author of "Meow!" (Special Prize of the Jury at the Cannes Festival, 1982) and "Animando" filmed at the National Film Board of Canada and awarded in CINANIMA ‘93 as the Best Didactic Film. Responsible for the first professional course of animation in Brazil, thanks to an agreement with the NFB, from 1985 to 1987. In 1986 he co-ordinated the film 2Planet Earth", a film made by 30 Brazilian animators for the International Year for Peace, ONU. Produced the film "Eight Pointed Star", animated by the plastic artist Fernando Diniz. Recently he has directed the experimental film "dOIS" as a visitor artist at the Animation and Digital Arts Department of the USC (University of Southern California). In this film he used both the technique of engraving directly on film and 3D Computer. He is also one of the directors and founders of the International Animation Festival of Brazil, Anima Mundi.

É natural do Rio de Janeiro. Autor de "Meow"!" (Prémio especial do Júri no Festival de Cannes em 1982) e "Animando", filmado no National Film Board do Canadá, premiado no CINANIMA 93, como melhor filme didáctico. Foi o responsável pelo primeiro curso profissional de animação no Brasil, devido a um acordo com o NFB, de 1985 a 1987. Em 1986 coordenou o filme "Planeta Terra", obra colectiva feita por 30 animadores brasileiros para o Ano Internacional da Paz da ONU. Produziu o filme "Estrela de Oito Pontas", animado pelo artista plástico Fernando Diniz. Recentemente realizou, como artista visitante na Divisão de Animação e Artes Digitais da USC (Universidade da Califórnia do Sul), o filme experimental "Dois", no qual integra animação gravada na película com personagens em computação 3D. É , também, um dos directores e fundadores do Festival Internacional de Cinema de animação do Brasil, Anima Mundi.

PEDRO FARIA LOPES (Portugal)

Started working in animation in 1977 and began his activity in cinema associations in 1978 at Clube Microcine, Núcleo de Cineastas Independentes and Federação Portuguesa de Cinema e Audiovisuais. In 1985 he won his University Degree in Electronics and Computers Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico. He defended his MSc thesis in 1989 (IST) on a computer 3D animation system, which was used to develop the first 3D television commercial made in Portugal. He won his PhD in 1996 (IST) with a new animation technique, the digital pinscreen, computer simulation of the Alexeieff-Parker pinscreen. This technique was then presented, by invitation, at the Musée Chateau d’Annecy Centennial Exhibition of the invention of the animation cinema, in 1995. His current interests include technology application to the performing arts. His last animation project, developed in 2D Morphing, was the video clip for Amelia Muge’s album, "Taco a taco". In association with Professor Wuetrich, Media Department, Bauhaus-Weimar University, Germany, he is preparing a book, with an interactive CD-ROM, on animation, computer graphics and Multimedia.

Começou a trabalhar em cinema de animação em 1977 e iniciou a actividade cine-clubista em 1978 colaborando com o Clube Microcine, Núcleo de Cineastas de Cineastas Independentes e Federação Portuguesa de Cinema e Audiovisuais. Em 1985 licenciou-se em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores pelo Instituto Superior Técnico. Defendeu Tese de Mestrado em 1989 (IST) desenvolvendo um sistema de animação 3D por computador, com o qual foi realizado o primeiro anúncio em 3D para televisão feito em Portugal. Doutorou-se em 1996 (IST) tendo desenvolvido uma nova técnica de animação de alfinetes Alexeieff-Parker, técnica apresentada, por convite, na exposição do centenário da invenção do cinema de Animação no Musée Chateau de Annecy, no ano de 1995. O seus interesses actuais são a aplicação da tecnologia às artes vivas. O último trabalho de animação realizado em Morphing 2, foi o teledisco do Album "Taco a Taco" de Amélia Muge. Prepara em co-autoria com o Professor Wuetrich, do Media Department, da Universidade da Alemanha, a edição de um livro com um CD-Rom interactivo sobre animação, computação gráfica e multimédia
