In this full-day workshop, James MacSwain will share some of his award-winning work and storyboard scripts as a beginning point for exploration into collage animation on the Oxberry 16mm stand. The group will then be broken up into two teams that James will lead through the process (start to finish) of scripting and shooting a short animated collage film on the 16 mm Oxberry stand that TAIS houses based on an idea the group devises.  This is an exciting opportunity to learn about the inner workings of James' art practice while gaining practical, hands on experience with his tools of choice.

About James MacSwain:
James was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia. He received a B.A. in English from Mount Allison University and studied theatrical arts at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. Since 1980 he has been working in film and video with a particular focus on 16 mm collage and animation, and has made over 20 films in the last 30 years. As a visual artist he works in photo-and collage-based images and has exhibited nationally. Presently he sits on the Exhibitions Committee of Visual Arts Nova Scotia and has just retired from his employment as the Director of Programming for the Centre For Art Tapes. James has been selected as the 2011 Images Festival Canadian Spotlight Artist.

Presented in partnership with The Images Festival and with funding support from The Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council.

Is Speed Painting a Sport? Learning Digital Content Creation by Watching

Posted In | Site Categories: 2D, Art, CG, Illustration, Short Films
Okay, so maybe it isn't really a full-blown sport, but if the proliferation of these videos of digital artwork screen-captured during the creation process is any indication, it's fast becoming a popular spectator event in any case.

Oscar Tour LA Photo Gallery: Disney Animation Research Library (ARL)

Posted In | Blog Categories: Oscar® Tour 2011, Animation Research Library | Site Categories: Art, Films, Illustration, Places
One of the highlights of the week was a morning spent at Disney's Animation Research Library (ARL). Housed in the non-descript former feature animation studio, the library houses more than 65 million pieces of animation art representing over 80 years of work from Walt Disney Animation. If you love animation, or have any sense of animation history, then the Disney ARL is a little slice of heaven. Actually, it's the whole pie.

FMX 2011

Starts: May 03, 2011 - Ends: May 06, 2011
Location: Stuttgart, Germany
Website: http://www.fmx.de/

Program

FMX 2011 promises to be another exciting conference where industry professionals interested in Global Production, Visual Art and Innovative Technologies descend on Stuttgart for four days of networking, presentations, technical demonstrations, conference papers and recruiting events. We will present exciting trends that are taking place in the industry. Full program information will be available soon!

History

FMX was initiated as an event for students labeled "Film and Media Exchange" (FMX) in 1994 and was supposed to take place every two years. As early as 1996 it became an annual event already . When the first FMX took place in 1994, the industry did not even dare to dream about the creative possibilities within computer animation and digital effects that exist today. Throughout the past fifteen years of its existence, FMX kept up with the developments and trends and has grown to become an important networking platform for those working with digital imagery.

"We Don’t Need Artists Anymore!" - Finding a Place in the Procedural World

Posted In | Site Categories: Art, Technology
I was stunned when I heard an engineer gleefully utter that proclamation. I wasn’t surprised by the sentiment; I know that a certain amount of friction exists between the polar worlds of artists and engineers - mostly, I believe, from the lack of a common language. But is that statement true?

Comic Con India 2011

Starts: Feb 19, 2011 - Ends: Feb 20, 2011
Location: Dilli Haat, India
Website: http://www.comicconindia.com

Why a Comic Convention?

Because of our love of comics! The straight forwardness of the illustrated medium, the way it is approachable to almost anyone. The many different styles and techniques there are to this art form, and the fact that it takes the reader experience to a whole new level, be it fantasy or even non-fiction.

Most importantly, in order to achieve a lot many of our goals of promoting comic books and graphic art. We have dedicated PR & Media Teams for the event. They will be putting together a tremendous effort for the widest possible coverage in all mediums for this event. This will also help participating brands, publishers, artists and writers to be showcased nationally and internationally.

We are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the comic and graphic art medium. As well as supporting artists, illustrators and writers in the medium.

The Indian Comic Con is an initiative of Twenty Onwards Media. We are a startup media house involved in Print, Music and Television. We are alternative and niche, with a focus on content and content based solutions for the entertainment of the younger demographic in India.

Some of our previous initiatives include RANDOM, India's longest running humor digest and The Golden Kela Awards, celebrating the worst in Indian cinema.

Note: There are many "Comic Cons" held around the world and we are NOT affiliated to any of them.  Please refer to this Link to understand the common usage of the term "Comic Con".

Art Takes Courage - Going Digital is Just One More Challenge

No matter how much you think you need a “normal life,” you really don’t have time for one - the earlier you recognize that, the better off you’ll be. You must have the courage to say “I need to do this” and then let the chips fall as they may.
