CARTOON has announced this year's nominees for the coveted Cartoon d'Or.
Making the list for best European animated short films are: L'ARME DU
CROCODILE by Eric Blesin (Belgium), EL CARMINANTE by Debra Smith (UK),
JOLLY ROGER by Mark Baker (UK), MIGRATION by Constantin Chamski (France),
LE CYCLOPE DE LA MER by Philippe Julien (France), and SALTKVERNEN by Pjotr
Sapegin (Norway). The annual Cartoon Forum, where the Cartoon d'Or is
awarded, is organized by AEFA Cartoon, the European Association for

The Walt Disney Company has named four executives to new positions. ETIENNE DE VILLIERS has been named president and managing director, Walt Disney International Europe; MICHAEL O. JOHNSON has been named president and managing director, Walt Disney International Asia; DIEGO LERNER has been named president and managing director, Walt Disney International Latin America; and PAUL SALEH has been named senior vice president and chief financial officer, Walt Disney International.

Each print, made in Russia from the drawings Norstein used to develop his characters, is hand signed by Norstein. Most of the proceeds from sales will go to help finance the ongoing production of "Overcoat," Yuri Norstein's famous work in progress, which he began after completing "Tale of Tales" in 1978, and is based on a famous story by Nikolai Gogol. The 6th Bradford Animation Festival, which took place June 19-24 in
Bradford, England, has announced the following winners. The Bradford
Animation Festival is a project of the newly-renovated National Museum of

The graduates of the University of Wales College Newport's animation
program will be presenting a screening of their work on Friday, July 2nd
1999 at 6 pm. The screening will be held at De Lane Lea, Dean Street,
London, England in the college's newly refurbished preview cinema. The
films are a mixture of techniques and styles, from an abstract musical
collaboration with renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie working directly
on film, to a cel-based narrative piece that makes SOUTH PARK look tame.

The Association of Independent Commercial Producers' (AICP) Eighth Annual
AICP Show, The Art & Technique of the American Television Commercial,
debuted at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City on June 9th, and will
tour in the United States and internationally until April 2000. The show
consists of about fifty live-action and animated spots. Selections were
made by more than 400 judges throughout the US, as well as a panel composed
of members of the industry from advertising agencies, production companies,

Catapult Productions' Kim Davidson and Arnie Zipursky, executive producers
of MONSTER BY MISTAKE, have promoted Rob Smith and Mark Mayerson to
producers for the second season of the computer animated TV series. Smith
and Mayerson will join Julie Stall, who was the first season producer.
Mayerson, who created the series, and Smith each directed five episodes of
the first season. Smith will continue to direct while Mayerson will be more
involved in stories and scripts. MONSTER BY MISTAKE began as a Halloween TV

Chromacolour, an international leader in the manufacture and sale of traditional and digital animation materials, software and equipment, has just moved their manufacturing operation to a new 20,000 square foot facility in North East Calgary, Canada. This is also the location of their global headquarters and Sales and Distribution center. The company's European Sales and Distribution center has been recently relocated to a new facility in London, England as well.

Animha Productions, a unique association of professionals dedicated to independent film production and animation workshops, recently produced "When the Water is Sick...," in association with the ASIFA Workshops Group. "When the Water is Sick..." has been shortlisted for an award at the 6th Bradford International Animation Festival (BAF!). It will also be included in a special compilation of animated films by children from around the world to be screened in Annecy, France, during the summer of 1999. Another new project has already been launched by Animha.
