INTERNATIONAL "PULCINELLA AWARDS" COMPETITION
The only International Competition dedicated to cartoon series and animated TV movies. Those participating are the programmes produced after the 1st January 1996. More than fifty works will be competing for the renowned statuettes, Lele Luzzati's Pulcinella, a quality Vietri ceramic sculpture. The International Jury will be composed of: Marc Du Pontavice (President and Manager Director, Gaumont Multimedia), Robby London (Senior Vice-President Dic Entertainment, USA), Theresa Plummer Andrews (Head of Acquisitions BBC Children's Programmes, UK), Michael Schaack (Managing Director and owner, Trickompany, Germany), Alessandra Valeri Manera (Head of Children's Programmes Reti Mediaset, Italy).

The recent world productions of tv-animation made available for you. You can watch, free of charge, in a comfortable environment, the programmes that interest you most, choosing from the hundred and thirty programmes selected for the Festival. A unique occasion to get up to date on world television cartoons production of the year. A chance to contact the producers and distributors of the programs which interest you most.

PREVIEWS
The Cartoons on the Bay Previews present the most important cinematographic and television events of the moment. The international echo of these presentations is guaranteed by the vast audience of producers, distributors, television broadcasters, specialised journalists -periodicals and dailies- and by the large number of television crews. The Previews program is made known during the official press conference of the presentation of the Festival.

NEW WAYS TO TELL A TALE
The fairy tales of the New Millenium are those of always, but they can be told in both new ways and modelled on tradition. The New Images have revolutionised cinematographic and television narration. The symbiosis between the live action and animation is more and more frequent and is deeply influencing the imagination of new generations. Cartoons on the Bay in this section presents both the best proposals of the way of classical narration and the works which look forward to the new forms of narration by images.

CARTOONS: CLASSICS, JAZZ, POP
Animation and music, a union which from the beginning of cinema animation has stimulated the imagination of the most sensitive authors. In Salerno, a wide retrospective of the most significant full-length and short musically inspiring films. Seventy works which have marked the history of cinema animation and its links with the musical universe. The show will be accompanied by meetings with musicians and authors.

THE FLINTSTONES, BUGS BUNNY & CO.
ALL TOGETHER NOW IN SEARCH OF NEW ADVENTURES

Bugs Bunny, The Flintstones, Daffy Duck, Tom and Jerry, Yogi and many other characters among the most well-loved by the public together in a program which celebrates the recent acquisition of Hanna-Barbera by the Time-Warner group.

CARTOON D'OR
Screenings of five film finalists of the European Prize promoted by the industrial platform Cartoon of the Media Program. The films are chosen every year from seven major European festivals dedicated to celebrated short and medium-length animation films.

NEITHER SYMBOLS, NOR INSTRUMENTS, JUST CHILDREN
The Review. In collaboration with the UNICEF Communications Department, the Italian Committee for UNICEF and Save the Children, RAI, Warner Bros, Giffoni Film Festival. This section presents a choice of full-length and short, live, and animated films, television films, documentaries and reports, made by Giffoni Film Festival, indicating ways of representing childhood by the media. The documentary "Seeds of Destiny", produced in 1947 by the American Army, on European Children after the Second World War, and the first preview of "The Eyes of War", by Kevin Costner on Bosnian children, will be presented, amongst others. Moreover, once more in preview, the television films co-produced by the RAI, "La storia di Gigi Due" by Luca and Marco Mazzieri, "Scardabà" by Felice Farina, and "Il goal del Martin Pescatore" by Ruggero Miti.



OTHER CONFERENCES AND PANELS

THE GOVERNMENT PROJECT FOR CHILDHOOD Saturday 5th
Meeting with the Minister of Social Affairs, Livia Turco, on the bill in favour of childhood, currently under discussion in Parliament.

CHILDREN CHANNELS: CURRENT VIEWS AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVES Sunday 6th
In collaboration with the UNICEF Communications Department. The conference proposes an up-to-date world outline of thematic networks dedicated to childhood. The broadcasters will describe the characteristics of the palimpsests, the user-pools, the production and acquisition policies, the development programs. Subsequently a number of scientists and humanists will discuss the consequences of a planetary television system dedicated to childhood. Those invited to participate in the conference are the semiologist Jean Baudrillard, the Nobel Prize Winner Rita Levi Montalcini and the writer Gore Vidal.

cAThY MALATESTA MEETS THE EUROPEANS Sunday 6th
The Vice-President of Warner Bros. International Television meets the members of the thirteen European groupings of studios to talk about the co-production policies of the multinational concerning independent community producers.

SCALING THE HEIGHTS OF ANIMATION Monday 7th
In collaboration with The Hollywood Reporter. The conference will analyze the structural limits of the world animation market and for how long the current growth trend will last. After two introductory reports by Tom Adams and Christian Davin the major world producers and broadcasters will discuss this subject.

NEITHER SYMBOLS,NOR INSTRUMENTS,JUST CHILDREN Monday 7th
In collaboration with Save the Children. The conference will discuss the issue of how the media, and especially television, presents the condition of children in war zones; when the child from suffering human being is transformed into symbol or instrument in the hands of the communicators. Participating in the discussion are documentary-makers, war correspondents, sociologists and representatives of humanitarian organizations.

CARTOON LICENSING Monday 7th/ Tuesday 8th
In collaboration with the European Cartoon industrial platform. It is the first time that the European licensing boards have met to discuss the development of a decisive commercial policy concerning products derived from community television series.

CLASSIFICATIONS, CHIPS AND ADVERTISING SPOTS: the Buttons War Tuesday 8th
National meeting between the representatives of different private and institutional national bodies involved in the elaboration of rules and regulations safeguarding children in relation to television.

WRITING CARTOONS IN EUROPE Tuesday 8th
Promoted by Scuola Rai and Asifa-Italia The panel will provide an outline of writing methods of animated series and full-length films adopted by some of the most qualified European story editors. The participants are Serge Rosenzweig (France), Robin Lyon (UK) and Umberto Marino (Italy).

MEDITERRANEAN CREATIVITY Wednesday 9th
European city studios of the Mediterranean basin will discuss common intervention policies concerning the development of the creative potential of the young by means of the creation of schools and training courses.

ITALIAN TELEVISION FOR CHILDREN
Meeting with the press for RAI and Mediaset directors on the subject of animated cartoons production and the initiatives concerning protection of childhood.

ANIMATHON AND LUDOPTIK ATELIERS
More than three hundred secondary school children of the province of Salerno will be involved from March 24th onwards in the making of an animation film on the subject of the single European currency Euro. Animathon is in fact a team contest during which the children will have to plan, dramatize, animate a film in record time on the basis of a predifined soundtrack. Ludoptik, on the other hand, is an atelier directed at primary school children, based on pre-cinematographic optical games from which children can learn the basic principles of animation. Animathon and Ludoptik are an exclusive of the Canadian company Animathon Inc. of André Leduc and Florence Bolté.

CARTOONS AND MULTIMEDIA
The CD-Rom is by now one of the derived products most taken into account in the conception of television and cinematographic cartoons. Many Cartoons, serials or not, already have their multimedial versions. What is the dimension of this phenomenon? Cartoons on the Bay proposes in this section an international panoramic of the multimedia products taken from animated films and serials of recent years.

KIDS SPEAK ON TV CARTOONS
An analysis of the perception of television cartoons on the part of Italian children has been carried out by the research society Mildword Brown with most interesting results for those who create, produce, and diffuse them.

MY RIGHTS
In the convent of San Francesco in Maiori, an exhibition of the Lelio Basso International Foundation, of drawings and texts carried out by school children from all over Italy on the Rights of Children sanctioned by the United Nations.

PRESS CONFERENCES
At the Cartoons Village of Amalfi, every day at 11,30, press conferences of authors and producers of the programs in the contest and other sections of the Festival. Amongst the others, the Press Conference of the Ente Fiera of Milan - Mifed.

TRIBUTE TO PINO ZAC
A tribute to the celebrated designer and author of animation films with a projection of his full-length film "Il Cavaliere Inesistente" and a choice of his drawings in the foyer of Cinema Fiamma in Maiori.



THE FESTIVAL

THE SALA DEL CROCIFISSO Amalfi
Formerly Cappella del Crocifisso, it will be the venue of the projections of competing programmes, a number of Special Events and conferences about animation. Darkened, soundproofed and heated for the occasion, it will have about four hundred seats in an architectural setting of peerless beauty. The hall is located next to the Duomo di Amalfi.

THE BUSINESS CLOISTER Amalfi
In the suggestive and relaxed atmosphere of the Chiostro del Paradiso, the delegates will surely find it pleasant to carry out their dealings, having an espresso break from time to time. The monitors for the previews will be available in the Showcase room located in the Cartoons village. The postboxes will allow the delegates to receive their messages and promotional materials. The Chiostro is located next to the Sala del Crocifisso.

THE SHOWCASE ROOM Amalfi
Equipped for both individual and collective previews of all the series and tv-movies selected for Cartoons on the Bay. Hostesses will provide the delegates with the video-cassettes requested. The Showcase room is located in the Cartoons Village.

THE CARTOONS VILLAGE Amalfi
Surrounded by the great promotional panels of products, companies and televisions, the Cartoons Village occupies the dock of Amalfi's harbour. It is the Festival's display case, with the televisions tensile structures, the megascreen for the projection of the Festival's video-news, the stands of the Festival's sponsors and partners, the tensile structure for the press conferences and meetings, and the Festival's boutique. At the Cartoons Village there are moorings for the delegates' motorboats which link Maiori, Amalfi and Salerno, every fifteen minutes.

THE OLD ARSENALS Amalfi
This is the first place the delegates will have to go for their accreditation and registration. The Old Arsenals will in fact host all the Festival's Administrative Offices (Accreditations, Head Office, Secretariat, etc.). The former Arsenals of the Amalfi Republic consist of a vast space cut of the rock and divided by a colonnade. The Old Arsenals are opposite the Cartoons Village.

THE PRESS ROOM Amalfi
The hundred or so Italian and foreign journalists credited at Cartoons on the Bay will have at their disposal a perfectly equipped Press Room situated, like last year, in the Piazza del Municipio di Amalfi. The Press and Documentation Office of the Festival will be available to facilitate their work and make their stay in Amalfi comfortable.

THE CONVENT OF SAN FRANCESCO Maiori
The conferences "Children and Television" will take place in this small and welcoming convent, whose entrance is softened by a garden, where a restaurant will be set up. The convent is situated in the coastal road opposite the tourist port of Maiori, where the delegates' carpark is to be found, and where the motorboats for Salerno and Amalfi will depart from.

THE CINEMA FIAMMA Maiori
The cinema will host the projections of the review Neither symbols, nor instruments, just children. It is situated in the centre of Maiori, has four hundred places and will be equipped with cinematographic and video projection systems.

THE TOYS VILLAGE Salerno
Games and toys are the subject of the Cartoons on the Bay Village in Piazza Amendola in Salerno. Here we find the great tensile structure of the Animathon and the Ludoptik ateliers, the stands of a number of companies where the cartoons merchandising will be on display, the megascreen for the projections, and the stage for the meetings between the authors and the public.

TEATRO VERDI Salerno
The Inaugural Ceremony of Cartoons on the Bay will take place in this superb example of an Italian theatre, as well as the Final Evening (Wednesday 9th at 21,00) with a grand show broadcast by RAITRE.

THE CINEMA CAPITOL Salerno
Cartoons: classics, jazz, pop: review on animation and music, will be presented in its entirety in this cinema of a thousand places, situated in the heart of the pedestrian area of Salerno. The films of the Preview section will also be presented, as well as the Fairy Tales section and a number of special events. The proceeds of the festival projections -both Salerno and Maiori- will be handed over to UNICEF and Save the Children.

THE CARTOONS AMUSEMENT PARK Salerno
In Salerno, an amusement park will decorate the moorings of the delegates'motorboats for Maiori and Amalfi, having Cartoons as a theme. Merry-go-rounds, tightrope walkers, jugglers will recall for the public that the world of animation interprets freedom, games, fantasy, as have done the circus and street theatre.



INAUGURATION

The Inauguration of Cartoons on the Bay 1997 will take place at the Teatro Verdi in Salerno on Saturday 5th at 11,30, with the participation of Renzo Arbore, Artistic Director of RAI International, which will broadcast news and reports during the five days of the Festival.

THE FINAL EVENING
Wednesday 9th at 17,00 in the Sala del Crocifisso of Amalfi, after the presentation of the winners of the Pulcinella Awards Contest, the Vice-President of the Council of Ministers Walter Veltroni will close the second edition of Cartoons on the Bay. At 21,00 at the Teatro Verdi of Salerno, Cartoons Galà, great show of cartoons broadcast by RAITRE and by RAI International.
