The second edition of CARTOONS ON THE BAY, the only International Festival dedicated to animation for television, will take place from the 5th to the 9th of April 1997.
The success of last year's Festival was shown by the importance of the people present, the high attendance level, and the degree of media coverage of the event, and this can all be seen in the information enclosed. It is therefore quite clear that this event promoted and organized by SACIS answers to the pressing need for television to be more attentive towards children and that, as we enter a new millennium, it should contribute to their growth and education, accompanying them into a multiracial society, also by using the power of cartoons to attract and entertain.
This success has been a stimulus for Sacis, the company's President, Giampaolo Sodano, and the Artistic Director, Alfio Bastiancich, to keep the event going strong and indeed to expand it, not only as regards its duration, which will be a day longer, but above all by dividing it into three parts: Festival, Children and Playing . There will also be a geographical extension of the event, which will now take place in Salerno and Maiori, as well as in Amalfi.
The Festival section includes the Competition and the meetings with cartoonists, producers and distributors from the worldwide audiovisual sector. Projections will take place in the attractive 'Del Crocifisso' ex-Church, next to the Cathedral of Amalfi, and the Cartoons village will be set up on the dockside of the beautiful town of Amalfi.
For the whole Festival period the town of Amalfi will be dressed in the colours of the European Union flag and European and American producers and broadcasters will attend an important conference organized by the American magazine "Hollywood Reporter" to analyse the development and prospects of the animation market.
The programme for the Children section, dedicated to the theme of childhood, and in particular the relationship between children and the television, will be held at Maiori. There will be three international conferences promoted by UNICEF, Save the Children and "Telefono Azzurro". Also planned is the European premier of the film "Children of Bosnia", with Kevin Costner, and the projection of "Seeds of Destiny", a documentary film dealing with the condition of children in Europe after the Second World War, which was shot by a film maker in the American army between 1946 and '47. A retrospective of films and cartoons dedicated to children's rights will be held and an exhibition will be presented by the Russel Foundation concerning the charter for children's rights.
Finally the recent draft laws "for the promotion of rights and opportunities for childhood and adolescence" which have just been put forward by the Italian Minister of Social Solidarity will form the basis for a meeting and discussion on this theme between those who work in audiovisual communications.
Salerno will host the Playing part of Cartoons on the Bay. There will be afternoon and evening projections which will include Tom and Jerry and Bugs Bunny together at last!, a great event organized by Warner Bros. who have chosen Cartoons on the Bay as the European venue to celebrate their acquisition of Hanna Barbera. In a tensostructure, set up in the area overlooking the seafront, there will be a new edition of Animathon. In the presence of Luigi Berlinguer, the Italian Education Minister, twenty school classes from all over the region, guided by a group of animation professionals from Canada, will create screenplays and drawings and produce their own original animated cartoons, the best of which will receive prizes.
The Festival will come to a close with the Prize-giving and a special show, which will be broadcast on RaiTV on the evening of 9 April at the Teatro Verdi of Salerno. Walter Veltroni, the Vice President of the Cabinet of the Italian government, has promised to be present.
The Jury will consist of Theresa Plummers Andrews, the Head of Children's Programmes Acquisition and Development at the BBC; Alessandra Valeri Manera, the Head of Mediaset Children's Programmes; Marc Du Pontavice, the Managing Director of Gaumont Multimedia; Michael Schaack, the Managing Director and owner of the German Trickompany; and Robby London, the Senior Vice President of Dic Entertainment.
