Taffy Signs Titeuf and Ava Riko Teo to Spain

The MoonScoop Group's Taffy Ent. has secured deals for two of its newest animated TV series on key broadcasters across Spain. Cartoon Network Spain has picked up all three seasons of TITEUF and TV Catalunya also snapped up broadcast rights to the new preschool series AVA RIKO TEO.

Chop Socky Chooks Head to France 3

DECODE Enterprises has signed a sales deal for CHOP SOCKY CHOOKS to France 3. The 26x22 3D animated series is a DECODE Ent. co-production with Aardman Animations.

The deal was concluded by Emmanuelle Bon, DECODE's newly-appointed Territory Manager for French speaking territories, Scandinavia and the Benelux.

Public channel France 3 follows commissioning broadcasters Cartoon Network (Worldwide) and Canada's Teletoon in acquiring the 7-11 years-targeted show which features "Kickin' Chickens in Kung Fu Capers."

Avatar: The Last Airbender Casting Controversy Continues

Online protests hoping to protest the casting of M. Night Shyamalan's live-action take on AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER are continuing.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY reported in December that Shyamalan offered the roles of Aang to karate-trained Texan Noah Ringer; Sokka to Jackson Rathbone (TWILIGHT); Katara to Nicola Peltz (DECK THE HALLS); and Zuko to Jesse McCartney, all Caucasian actors to portray Asian characters.

Now and Zen Debut Apparel Programs for Chowder and Flapjack

Tuesday marks the debut of consumer products campaigns for two of Cartoon Network's top-rated original comedy series, CHOWDER and FLAPJACK, as Now and Zen Productions was named the apparel partner for both brands. This marks the first licensing deal for each brand, with product launching at specialty retailers nationwide this spring. The apparel lines from Now and Zen will include T-shirts and fleece tops for both juniors and young men and will bring the whimsical tone and humor of the shows to fans.

SpongeBob Documentary Gets I.O.U.S.A., Worldplay Team

Nickelodeon has inked a deal with production company O'Malley Creadon to produce the first-ever SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS documentary in celebration of the series' 10th anniversary. Acclaimed filmmaker Patrick Creadon (WORDPLAY and I.O.U.S.A) will co-produce, direct and write the documentary, along with co-producer Christine O'Malley. The one-hour original television documentary (title TBA) will chronicle the ascent of the absorbing character's journey to pop culture stardom.

Coraline Game Features Voice Cast From Film, Out Soon

The CORALINE videogame from D3Publisher, based on LAIKA's new movie -- the first-ever stop-motion animated feature to be made in 3-D -- will feature the voice talents of Dakota Fanning, Keith David, and Robert Bailey Jr. All three actors will reprise their onscreen voiced roles of Coraline Jones (Fanning), Cat (David) and Wybie Lovat (Bailey Jr.).

Bebop Anime Film Adaptation Gets Keanu

Keanu Reeves is attached to star in a live-action adaptation of Japanese anime TV series COWBOY BEBOP for Twentieth Century Fox, according to VARIETY.

Reeves would reunite with THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL producer Erwin Stoff (through his 3 Arts banner) and would play the role of Spike Spiegel, an adventurous bounty hunter traveling through space circa 2071. Spiegel and his fellow bounty hunters travel via spaceship, the Bebop.

Screenplay is being penned by Peter Craig and Joshua Long is exec producing.

Anima 09 To Preview Miyazaki's Ponyo

The 28th edition of the Brussels Anima Festival, one of the most important animation festivals in Europe, will be taking place during the Carnival holiday period, from February 20-28.

Anima 2009 will be once again opening with a sneak preview: the latest film by Hayao Miyazaki, PONYO ON THE CLIFF BY THE SEA, an animated feature for young and old, whose heroine is a little goldfish princess who desperately wants to become human, and in her search, becomes friends with 5-year-old Sosuke. This film was in the official competition at the last Venice festival.

Little Princess Set to Rule in Spain

TV-Loonland has secured various deals within the Spanish territory for its animation series LITTLE PRINCESS, produced by The Illuminated Film Company.

Free TV rights were licensed to TVE Spain and Cartoon Network Spain acquired the Pay TV rights for the preschool series. LITTLE PRINCESS is set to premiere soon on TVE's LA 2.

Home entertainment rights were picked up by Big Picture Ent. and will release the first LITTLE PRINCESS DVD in August/September 2009.

Renegade Animation, Fitzroy Media Plan Animated Heathcliff Interstitials

Street-smart feline Heathcliff is about to make a comeback as media property development company Fitzroy Media (FRM) has tapped Renegade Animation to produce a series of new projects featuring the mischievous cat.

This month, Renegade will begin production of 50 two-minute animated interstitials. Animation director Darrell Van Citters, who leads Renegade's creative team, will develop an updated look for the new animation. Targeting an adult and tween audience, the new Heathcliff will focus on comedy set against a hip, club-music sound.

The NAACP announced its contenders for the 40th Annual Image Awards, to be held at the Shrine Auditorium on Feb. 12 (per VARIETY).

In animation, DORA THE EXPLORER and GO, DIEGO, GO were both nominated in the Children's Program category. THE BOONDOCKS writers Aaron McGruder & Rodney Barnes and THE SIMPSONS writer Marc Wilmore were nominated for Writing in a Comedy Series.

Imagi Still Plagued by Financial Concerns

Hong Kong- and Los Angeles-based animation studio Imagi International is still experiencing financial problems, reports VARIETY ASIA (via Cartoon Brew).

Auditors gave the company a "going concern" qualification to the half-year results of the firm, which is currently in production on CG feature ASTRO BOY and who animated TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES for Warner Bros. and Weinstein Co. last year.

Beep Beep! Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote Make Rose Parade Appearance

The state of New Mexico will feature a Warner Bros. animation-themed float at the 2009 Tournament of Roses Parade January 1.

The required all-natural "Hats off to New Mexico -- BEEP BEEP!" float features onion seeds, split peas, orange split peas, thousands of straw flowers, 9,400 roses, 8,500 red carnations and a host of other materials, according to a story in THE SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN (via Cartoon Brew).

Cartoon Network Goes Looney in New Year

Cartoon Network will broadcast a 14-hour New Year's Day marathon of classic Warner Bros. cartoons, according to CartoonBrew.com.

Starting with THE WABBIT WHO CAME TO SUPPER at 6 a.m. on January 1, 2009, the marathon will include 95 shorts spanning four decades. The marathon will conclude at 7 p.m. with Chuck Jones’ ONE FROGGY EVENING, DUCK AMUCK, DUCK DODGERS and WHAT’S OPERA DOC?. The entire schedule is posted on the Termite Terrace Trading Post forum.

CGI spectacular THE PINKY AND PERKY SHOW is due to screen across the BBC this Christmas with a special festive helping of everyone's favorite pigs.

PPC Enterprises, which holds M&L rights in the brand, has revealed that the show will screen four times on CBBC over the Christmas period, as well as showing at 10 a.m. on BBC One on Christmas Day.

Gene Colan Wins Cartoon Art Museum's Sparky Award

Gene Colan is the recipient of the 2008 Sparky Award, which was presented to him by Cartoon Art Museum's founder Malcolm Whyte during the museum's "Salute to Gene Colan" on Thursday, December 4, 2008.

The Sparky Award is named in honor of Charles "Sparky" Schulz, the creator of PEANUTS. Schulz was nicknamed "Sparky" after the horse Sparkplug featured in the comic strip BARNEY GOOGLE. The Sparky Award is presented on behalf of the Cartoon Art Museum and the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Library.
