Special Guest:  JJ Villard  www.jjvillard.com

FFAF continues its Salutation to Tinselville this week with more animation conversation from the Heart of Hollywood.  This week's special guest and lovably evil animator-innovator, JJ Villard, scratches the true grit of the LA animation underbelly as he devles into discussion on his films, animation career prep, dirty-dogs, the worth of the festival-hussle, the subtext of the Walk of Fame, choice Starbucks beverages, Shrek, major studio lunch-spreads, and how to charm the evil of it all.

Congrats on the interview with JJ Villard. Some of the best quotes would make great ringtones.

JJ - you sound exactly like my favorite type of artist: brilliant, opinionated, energetic and someone I never, EVER want to be around.

If I see you in real life - I'll come up, say gday and then run.

Keep doing what you're doing.

Somebody has to.

Cheers

Being new to LA & the Entertainment field, I first met JJ through some mutual friends. They told me he would be a good guy to know to help get me started in the industry. He was very polite and professional over the phone before we met, and he told me about an industry party that we should go to; he said it would be a great place to make connections and meet people.

We first met up at Boardner's Bar in Hollywood. At first, he was very genteel as he asked me about my past and what I wanted to do in the business.

Then, the whiskey came into play.

By the time we actually got to the party (after being driven there by JJ in the scariest and drunkest car ride ever, racing down Hollywood blvd), JJ could barely talk, let alone mingle. It was like watching a wild dog run into an Arby's watching JJ dive into the food that had been laid out, not to mention all the stares from people. My stomach turned when I barely made out their whispers of "who is THAT guy?" "do you know him?". The night with JJ ended when I turned my neck for a moment and lost track of him.

He was discovered outside passed out in the bushes; belt unbuckled and with puke covering his hands. A small group had gathered, and all I could do was shake my head when someone asked me "do you know this guy?".

But the night was not a total loss; I meant a production guy at the party, and it actually led to my first job at NBC.

So, Thanks JJ!!

JJ is a mad genius. Anyone who has actually worked in this industry with him will assure you that. He's a welcome break from the myopic creative view that smothers most artistic vision in this town.
