The YouTube Play jury list is out and there are some stellar people on it.

Funny thing though, a number of these folks label themselves as artist/filmmakers. So there's a blurring of the lines - artist? filmmaker? Which is probably a good thing actually, because in the end the label doesn't count anyway and it's only what we create that makes a difference.

But it does lead to some interesting questions about what categorizes art, and who does and doesn't get to wear the artist label. (But more on that another time.)

Back to the jury:

Performance artist Laurie Anderson; experimental, psychedelic band Animal Collective;  filmmaker Darren Aronofsky; Douglas Gordon who made the " 24 Hour Psycho" film; artist Marilyn Minter; photographer Ryan McGinley;  famous artist Takashi Murakami; video artist Shirin Neshet;  graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister;  experimental filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul; and last but not least the jury chair Nancy Spector, Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The choice of Nancy Spector in this position totally makes sense - she's shaped exhibitions that include cutting edge video, for example curating a show on Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle.

Marilyn Minter
A still from the work of artist Marilyn Minter, which focuses on the manipulation of glamour and desire.

I'm still not completely clear about why YouTube went looking for artists to jury these films. Or maybe the Guggenheim romanced YouTube for it's mass media audience.  Either way, it's a marriage made in marketing heaven.
