The New York Comic Con, version 10.2012

The Javits Convention Center was bustling but navigable Thursday; Friday's edition was massively attended. (Calling the packed crowd milling about the main concourse ‘a sea of people’ wouldn’t begin to do it justice; a better comparison would be to Times Square on New Year’s Eve.) Come the weekend I suspect everyone who bought a ticket to the completely sold-out event will be here today.

As mentioned previously, the BIFF screening schedule is not for the faint of heart. There are Beaufortonians that have seen EVERY film at all four BIFF festivals since its inception. This year over 4000 people watched the films and attended the Festival’s events.

Indie Gains: Why Design Matters to Independent Game Development

Posted In | Blog Categories: Games

It's been a couple of weeks since the Freeplay festival took place in the State Library here in Melbourne. This blog post is a summary of my response and the ideas that kept cropping up in my mind; it's about attitudes in design and is super long, my apologies. Freeplay is a games festival that has been running for around 5 years now, and for the past couple of years it's been helmed by the team of Paul Callaghan and Eve Penford-Dennis. The event provides a great environment for the local development community to come together and talk about their current projects, and in the process raise the level of awareness about current game development activity in Melbourne and elsewhere here in Australia.

Travel Tales: Mapping the Extraordinary With Short Films

SXSW 2011 has come and gone, and many of us are still recovering from its bounty. At most festivals, I choose to watch short films over features in large part because distribution for these works is so limited and one is able to get a fantastic sample of the current creative landscape. Stitched together by the programmer’s hand, the collective works take viewers on a journey through many realms, emotions and experiences.

No Job Offer? So what...

Sometimes you feel like no matter what you do you just can’t seem to get it right.  All the resume rewrites, networking parties, email requests, introductions and you still can’t get a job offer. When the going gets tough you don’t necessarily need to get going-in the other direction. When the jobs fall through, you...

When You Play Your A-Game

Posted In | Blog Categories: Career Advice | Site Categories: Business, Jobs & Recruiting
Giving it your all, calling in the shots, focusing, following, listening and playing your A-Game.  When you’ve given it your best shot in your job efforts and have shown up to deliver your best, it’s now time for the hard part, to sit back, trust and yes, wait.  Finding the resolve to release control over the job process when you know in your heart of hearts that you’ve showed up and delivered your best is not always easy.  Playing the waiting game, replaying the meetings, interview, follow-up over again in your head thinking maybe you could do something differently is not going to help the process move any quicker for you.
