The Great Pig Pirate - Mateo is one of the main 5 star projects of 2002 Korean Cultural Contents Association (KOCCA),and was also selected as the SPP support project of Seoul International Comic Animation Festival (SICAF).The Star Project policy by KOCCA aims to develop and explore the representative contents corresponding to 'Mickey Mouse' in the States and 'Doraemon' in Japan
In terms of script, Duane Capizzi who is in charge of Batman at Warner Bros. took part in writing the script. It can be said that some of the best staff members in Korea worked on the production, such as Yoon Seok-hwa who is a producer of <Hong Gil-dong> that recorded the top box office record in Korean animations.

Deep in the space, Oinka is a very peaceful town in Skyland, the floating land in the sky, the only place to live that avoids the polluted lands and seas below. Mateo and his gang's ridiculous pirating practices are the only disturbance. Princes Cutlette, accidentally falls into Mateo gang's house while trying to escape from a villain named Wolfbeard. She has a gold locket that holds the secrets to the kingdom. Mateo and his gang excitedly plan to hold her for ransom. However, allured by Cutlette who wants to give back the locket, they instead start a long journey to find the kingdom's royal treasure...
- Characters
Mateo: A smallish-but-charismatic young pig with a steely grin. He is the leader of the gang, an ace pilot, and a true adventurer. Mateo wants to be a legendary figure. He believes that he will become a legendary pirate if he sticks to Pirate Handbook.
Snout: A brisk fighter warthog. He thinks that he himself is a good, brave, and tough fighter. His haste to action tends to make things go wrong. Among the gang, he would be the best pirate. He wants to be a pirate in order to make fortune...
Iggy: A crazy-eyed technician. He prefers working on machinery to pirating. He built all their handmade aircrafts and made all their weapons. He has a dream to steer and mend a big pirate ship
Cutlette: A wild princess. She is adventurous and curious. She wants to be an explorer, rather than a good princess.
Lump: A kind-faced, heavy-set pig. He is a big eater. Usually gentle, however when it comes to food, his marvelous strength comes up. He speaks and moves slowly. He isn’t that bright, but he is very nice and loyal.
