I'LL SLEEP WHEN I'M DEAD (2004) (***)

The best way I can describe this film is that the jazz soundtrack fits it perfectly. Will (Clive Owen, CLOSER) is a former gangster who has given up the tough life for a hermit-like existence living on the road. His younger brother Davey (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM) has become a small time drug dealer and hustler, who meets a violent end.

Almost like he knows something is wrong, Will returns to investigate the circumstances of his brother’s death. His return is not welcomed by top gangster Turner (Ken Scott, THE BOXER) and his ex-girlfriend Helen (Charlotte Rampling, SWIMMING POOL) wishes he’d just leave town right away. Other notable characters include Davey’s friend and Will’s former lieutenant Mickster (Jamie Foreman, SAVING GRACE) and the twisted car dealer Boad (Malcolm McDowell, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE).

Even from the black & white opening titles one can tell the influence of film noir on this film. Like jazz, the film moves at a haphazard pace, is moody and surprises with dashes of dry humor. Will is a vicious man who regrets the choices he has made in life. He feels the same about his brother. For a good portion of the film, there are two plotlines running simultaneously – Will’s new life and the affairs of Davey. This along with the methodical pace is equal parts maddening and fascinating. Some parts will seem pointless until their nuisances are revealed later on.

The film comes to an ends with a brilliant exchange between Will and Boad. However, the final scene circles around to the same screen that the film starts out with, leaving the film’s last few moments tensely open-ended. It’s a dark tale that is well acted and executed. If you give it your patience, you might be quite surprised with the finished affair.
