CAN'T HARDLY WAIT (1998) (**)

Check Out the Trailer

There are moments of honesty in this film and then there are moments that come from another planet. The intergalactic action overrides anything of worth in this film.

The movie has that teen movie formula where the graduating class all meet for one last party. The film is filled to the brim with characters, which adds a nice full feel to the class, but gives too much screen time to too many pointless episodes. The central story follows Preston Meyers (Ethan Embry, EMPIRE RECORDS), who has longed for the beautiful Amanda Beckett (Jennifer Love Hewitt, THE TUXEDO) since the moment he first met her. Well, they really didn’t meet, because she has no clue who he is. Her jocky and cocky boyfriend Mike Dexter (Peter Facinelli, THE BIG KAHUNA) has just broken up with her and Preston wants to give her a letter that tells her what he really thinks about her.

The episode is pure fantasy and works not for a second. The more interesting scenario is between Preston’s cynical friend Denise Fleming (Lauren Ambrose, TV’s SIX FEET UNDER) and over-reaching homie wanna-be Kenny Fisher (Seth Green, AUSTIN POWERS). They use to be friends, but grew apart, however being locked in a bathroom forces them back together. Even though this episode is more realistic, it offers little surprises.

The other key character would be nerd on a mission William Lichter (Charlie Korsmo, HOOK), who has a plan to get revenge on the jocks that tormented him. Having fun at the party ruins his plans. Everyone learns big lessons in this one magical night, etc., etc. etc.

The film is a bloated rehash of THE BREAKFAST CLUB and a wimpy version of AMERICAN PIE. However, the film is now in retrospect a who’s who of young Hollywood. The film is not worth the time or the agony of disrespecting these actors to list them all. Check out IMDB.com and you’ll see what I mean. The film is just another teen movie.
