The Animation Pimpcast #10: One on One with Gerben Schermer

Chris Robinson chats with the HAFF festival co-founder and director.

Animation writer and Ottawa International Animation Festival programmer Chris Robinson sits down with a variety of animation types to fondle their minds through informal chats about animation, life and whatever else they feel like discussing.

In the latest episode of The Animation Pimpcast, Chris Robinson and Gerben Schermer drink wine in a Quebec City bar on a cold day in December 2014 and discuss the 30th anniversary of the Holland Animation Film Festival, Schermer’s animation roots, the challenges of festival selection, HAFF’s always delicious festival posters, and angry animators.

Gerben Schermer started the Holland Animation Film Festival together with animation filmmaker Gerrit van Dijk in 1985. Schermer’s passion for the continuation of animation as an independent art form has led to a distinguished career in festival selection and programming. Schermer has held positions as a member of the board of the international organisations ASIFA and CARTOON, and the Dutch organisations Holland Animation Association and House of Shorts. He was a founding member of the Netherlands Institute for Animated Films and served as a consultant for the Netherlands Film Fund. Nowadays Schermer is active in the advisory committee for the Grant Programme for Design of the Creative Industries Fund and recently also as advisor for the VandenEnde Foundation.
