Servais has the rare skill of being able to apply a different graphic style to each of his films, exploring a wide range of styles and techniques while remaining true to his art. Narration and a strong sense of screenplay mingle with surrealistic, caustic and poetic dreamscapes. This is the first time that the works of Raoul Servais are available on video. These unknown gems of Belgian animation were unearthed by Folioscope. Sure to be a treat for most of us. On leur doit les premiers films d'animation, dans les années quarante et cinquante. A Liège, Albert Fromanteau (1916-1988) stimulé par l'exemple de Paul Nagant son ancien patron, animait le personnage de BD Wrill le renard (créé par Madeleine Charlier) pour les Editions Chagor (Charles Gordinne). Plus tard à Bruxelles, Claude Misonne et son mari Joâo B. Michiels créaient des poupées animées pour la publicité puis pour des courts métrages, avant d'attaquer un long métrage, commandité par Wilfried Bouchery. Ce même Bouchery avait été le financier du studio d'animation AFIM, à Anvers puis à Keerbergen. C'est là que malgré la guerre et l'occupation, débutèrent Ray Goossens, Bob De Moor et M.V.Colbrant. Ensemble, ils réalisèrent Smidje Smee, cartoon musical lorgnant largement vers les Etats-Unis. Au Congo belge, Roger Jamar réalisait à la demande des Pères blancs des films d'animation mettant en scène les légendes locales, pour les petits congolais. Exhumés après des décennies d'oubli, ces cinq courts métrages au parfum rétro, émouvant et naïf, représentent les premiers pas d'une animation belge riche en promesses.
