Animated Minyanville Wins Biz Reporting Emmy

Financial information and entertainment company Minyanville Media has won a Business and Financial Reporting Emmy for its animated news show MINYANVILLE'S WORLD IN REVIEW WITH HOOFY AND BOO.

The show was honored by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, in the New Approaches to Business & Financial Reporting category for its groundbreaking weekly show starring the animated icons of finance, Hoofy the Bull and Boo the Bear.

Annie Award Nominations Announced

ASIFA-Hollywood has announced the nominations for its 36th Annual Annie Awards, recognizing the year's best animated features, television productions, commercials, videogames and short subjects. DreamWorks Animation's KUNG FU PANDA leads the field with 17 nominations out of 27 overall for the studio, including Best Animated Feature, and individual nominations for character animation, character design, directing, music, production design, storyboarding, voice acting and writing.

Waltz Dances Away With Brit Indie Award

Animated feature WALTZ WITH BASHIR won the Best Foreign Film at this year's British Independent Film Awards.

The 11th annual awards were announced Sunday at Old Billingsgate Market in London. Sony Pictures Classics is releasing Ari Folman's film in Los Angeles on December 25 and New York on December 26. The film will get a wide U.S. release in January.

Encounters 08 Awards Announced

The Encounters Short Film Festival announced Saturday the winners of its 14th annual international competition to find the world's best new live action or animated films of under 30 minutes length.

At a gala ceremony -- held before a capacity audience -- the five-month long judging process, with the submission of 1,183 entries from 63 countries, reached its finale with presentations of the festival's principal prizes.

Manchester agency The Neighbourhood, headed by Ben Davies Managing Director, Jon Humphreys Creative Director and Tim Woods Technical Directorm, scooped the Grand Prix at the third annual Fresh Digital Awards, with their STORIES FROM THE NEIGHBOURHOOD work.

The Fresh Digital Awards 2008 took place on Thursday November 20, 2008 at the Deansgate Hilton Hotel in Manchester with a record attendance of more than 300 guests to witness the best show of regional creativity and innovation in Digital outside of London.

Ratatouille, Up Composer Michael Giacchino to Conduct Oscar Orchestra

Michael Giacchino will serve as the musical director for the 81st Academy Awards telecast. Though Giacchino has composed music and conducted orchestras for both film and television, this will be his first time with the baton for the Oscar telecast and for a live broadcast.

Last year, Giacchino received an Academy Award nomination for Music -- Original Score for his work on the animated film RATATOUILLE. His film credits also include SPEED RACER, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III, THE FAMILY STONE and THE INCREDIBLES.

Surrealist Migrations Wins Poetry Film Prize

Animated MIGRATIONS, by filmmaker Alyssa Sherwood, is the inaugural winner of the $10,000 Poetry Film Prize from The Poetry Foundation and Facets Multi-Media. Selected by a jury from more than 80 entrants, the film is based on a poem by Dorian Merina, a Filipino-American poet, journalist and the recipient of a 2008 Pulitzer fellowship. The award was presented last week at the closing night ceremony of the 25th Annual Chicago International Children's Film Festival.

The Writers Guild of America, West's Animation Writers Caucus (AWC) has named writer Linda Woolverton as the honoree of its eleventh annual Animation Writing Award for lifetime achievement, recognizing her creative contributions to advance the craft of film and television animation writing. The Guild's prestigious award was presented to Woolverton at the AWC's annual awards ceremony held on November 6 at WGAW headquarters in Los Angeles.

Who will reign as the People's Choice? Batman, Indy or Iron Man? The nominees for the 35th annual People's Choice Awards were announced Monday.

Hollywood Post Alliance Honors Dark Knight, Wall-E

Thursday evening, the Hollywood Post Alliance 2008 Awards were handed out, including editing wins for THE DARK KNIGHT, color grading for IRON MAN and audio post for WALL-E.

Per VARIETY, the HPA calendar ends early, meaning 2007 holiday releases are included with features released through summer 2008.

Elizabeth Daly, dean of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, was presented the first Charles S. Swartz Award that recognizes "broad and lasting contributions that have advanced and/or provided some unique purpose to the field of Post Production."

To qualify in the Animated Feature Film category for the 81st Academy Awards, filmmakers must submit entry forms and supporting materials to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by 5 p.m. PT on Monday, November 3.

The deadline to submit accompanying film prints is Friday, November 14.

BAFTA's Children's Award Nominees Announced

This year's EA British Academy Children's Awards will take place on Sunday, November 30, 2008 to celebrate excellence in all art forms of the moving image for children -- in film, television, video games and online.

In animation, CHARLIE AND LOLA, ELIOT KID, SHAUN THE SHEEP and SKUNK FU! are nominated for best animation, and CHARLIE AND LOLA, LITTLE PRINCESS, PEPPA PIG and ROARY THE RACING CAR are nominated for best preschool animation.

WALL-E's Down To Earth Wins At World Soundtrack Awards

"Down to Earth," from Disney-Pixar's WALL-E, was awarded Best Original Song at the World Soundtrack Awards held last weekend in Ghent, Belgium.

The song's music is by Thomas Newman and Peter Gabriel, lyrics by Peter Gabriel, and is performed by Peter Gabriel.

Composer James Newton Howard won Film Composer of the Year in the night's big award for his work on CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR, MICHAEL CLAYTON and I AM LEGEND.

The Foundry's Ocula 3-D Plug-Ins Win Best Of IBC Award

Visual effects software developer, The Foundry's Ocula -- its plug-in toolset developed specifically to deal with problems encountered during 3-D stereo post production -- was recognized with a "Best of IBC" award in the Post Production category by the editorial teams of The IBC Daily and TVB Europe magazine.

The awards recognize the very best product innovations at IBC, and the judging team hunted for new products that clearly showed the potential for end users to either make or save money.

Interactive Achievement Awards Gets New Partnership

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) and the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), have signed an agreement where the IGDA will become involved in the Interactive Achievement Awards (IAAs).

The IAAs, now in their 12th year, are supported by all of the major video game publishers and developers in the industry. Their purpose is to recognize the top creative and commercial successes each year with Academy, and now IGDA members, voting on the winners.
